Basic Rights Oregon Condemns 9/11 Comparison Made By Anti-Gay Petition Backers

Anti-discrimination group calls statements made by "Concerned Oregonians" bizarre and disgusting.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - John Hummel, Executive Director of Basic Rights Oregon, today condemned comments made by anti-gay activist David Crowe, who called an elections complaint against his group "Oregon's Own 9-11" and "an attack within our borders."

The complaint was filed last week against Crowe's group, "Concerned Oregonians" and another organization gathering signatures to force a vote on Oregon's new family fairness and anti-discrimination laws.

"This comparison is incredibly disrespectful not only to the mourning of our nation but to the families of those who died and to those who fought so hard to saves lives at Ground Zero," Hummel said.

"For David Crowe to compare his own self-inflicted legal troubles to the events of 9/11 is beyond comprehension, purely reprehensible and downright bizarre."

In an e-mail with the subject line "Defaming To Destroy: Oregon's Own 9-11," Concerned Oregonians leader David Crowe complains of a "September Day of Infamy" occasioned by the elections complaint.

The complaint, filed last week by ballot watchdog Ellen Lowe, alleges that Concerned Oregonians is violating the law by soliciting campaign donations while unlawfully promising donors that they are eligible for a "dollar for dollar" political tax credit. The Secretary of State has said that it plans to investigate the complaint.

Crowe's email also singled out a Eugene, OR pastor who has alerted other churches to the complaint. Rev. Dr. Dan Bryant, of First Christian Church in Eugene, sent a letter to 3,000 pastors last week sharing his concerns about the group. Crowe's email says that Rev. Bryant is "part of a cabal that begins with the Governor, extends through Basic Rights Oregon, the law firm of Smith, Diamond and Olney, and into 'ecumenical' church leadership in Oregon."

"This bizarre attack only reinforces my deep concern about these groups that are trying to use our churches for their campaign purposes," Rev. Dr. Bryant said today. "If you disagree with them on any issue or question their methods, they come after you with absurd claims and malicious accusations."

Basic Rights Oregon will continue to closely monitor the petition process and still expects the referenda to qualify for the ballot. "We are are saddened these groups, which are so out of step with Oregonian values of fairness and basic decency, continue to push their extremist agenda," Hummel said.

Neal et al: One proven-by-research element of those hooked by such irrational beliefs is inability to accept reality and/or beliefs of any others. Recent cognitive/scientist studies indicate a recurring pattern among/such, dangerous and damaging to democracy since invulnerable to rational and reasonable dialog, no matter how high-piled facts may be made available. Neocons count on that now-proven phenomenon, which is where "Noise Machine" and other cabal-based, corporate and Far Right/funded actions in past 30 years originated and have continued. Big Tobacco attack on open reality of Oregon initiative system now underway is direct proof of precisely this level of attack for private dollar-gains.

They also use misleading names.. "Concerned Oregonians" huh? Oregonians should be concerned about THEM! But I am not surprised at all that these self-proclaimed moral watchdogs lie through their teet. I met some of them at the State Fair at their "Reclaim the vote" booth. I asked who took the vote. The legislature, I was told, did. I asked how did they do this? I was told by passing SB2 and HB2007. I asked how did this take any vote? I was told because the voters passed Measure 36. I pointed out that the OFC that created and spearheaded Measure 36 is on record stating that neither SB2 nor HB2007 in any way are incompatible or violate Measure 36. I was told marriage was a religious issue. I said OK but what about all the religions that have no issue with gay marriage? Measure 36 precludes their performed marriages from being legally recognized. What about THEIR religious rights? I was told that 'those churches' are 'just wrong' and the law should not support wrong things. It went round and round like that for a while and I just got more and more amused until I could not stop laughing so I moved on. These zealots are so halfbaked in everything they do and so relentlessly inconsistent and incoherent it is just sad they are able to rope so many into their BS. Ah well...

That is what HATE GROUPS do. Unfortunately, ignorant people jump on the band wagon.
