Does Your child belong to you or the State?

Spanking apparently is headed for another swatting in the California Legislature, as Assemblywoman Sally Lieber, D-Mountain View, has reintroduced a proposal to effectively ban such discipline, even by parents, according to the Capitol Resource Family Impact organization.

“Last session this same bill received national attention because of its assault on parents rights to discipline their children,” said Karen England, executive director with the group. “We succeeded in stopping the bill because parents were so outraged that an arrogant lawmaker thinks she knows better than parents how to raise their children.”

Last year’s plan as AB755, and this year’s, AB 2943, is virtually the same, England said.

“According to AB 2943, a parent who spanks their child would be placed on probation for a minimum of four years, and would be forced to attend a ‘nonviolent parental education class’ and the child would receive a criminal court protective order ‘protecting the victim from further acts of violence or threats’ and ‘residence exclusion or stay-away conditions,’” England said.

The bill itself dumps parental discipline into categories previously reserve for child abuse.

While I would never approve of any child discipline that causes serious bodily or emotional injury, I do not believe it is a state interest to place the government between a child and parent when it comes to discipline that does not rise to the level of child abuse. Spare the rod and spoil the child, discipline a child in the ways of God (morality) and when they get old they shall not depart from those lessons, are still of value today. Yet, day after day we are witnessing the state assuming absolute control over the minds and bodies of our children, demanding they be raised according to liberal principles and few people are objecting.

This lady is crazy.  How do people like this get elected?  People need to realize that there is a big difference between spanking and beating your child.  My parents spanked me when I was a child and I do not see a problem with it.

A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers.

Assemblywoman Leiber isn’t really concerned abut spanking. What she wants is one more foothold by liberal California agencies in taking over families… sort of like legislating that village that raises the children.

My child belongs to himself. And the “State” would be well advised to stay the hell away from him.

I can count on one hand the number of times I ever swatted my kid. But she got it when the infraction occurred, and in measure to its severity. Now I’ll grant you she was maybe an exceptional child, but the point is, kids need correction, and before they are old enough to reason with (around 25 or 30 I’d say), they need to be taught actions have consequences. Bad action=bad consequence. Should be simple enough for even a liberal to understand, wouldn’t you think? Guess not.

Because of liberal policies, less than half of our inner city children graduate from high school.

They have no leg to stand on.  They do not know what they do, only what “feels” right.  They are not rooted in values or morals.  Now they want to tell parents how to raise kids..?

Ha.  Not going to happen as long as there is a first and second admendment.

pparets: Depends on what the meaning of “spanked” is- and hopefully the statute of limitations is 20 years or less..

WTF? What does this have to do with child rearing? Or does this have to do with you reinforcing some phony, macho “law enforcement” persona you created on another thread?

Trolls. It’s what’s for breakfast!

If physical force is not violence-free, then we must also remove such from law enforcement efforts.  We would also do well to retrain our military in the same methods of non-violent coercion.

Stop! Or I will say stop again! That always works.
