The Risks

I read this on ksl.com. It's just a little frightening. Stalkers beware. I'm arming myself with poopy diaper missiles. I'll save diarrhea ones for special occasions. You've been warned. Plan on seeing not quite so many children pictures in the future, but I'm not too worried.

Staying Safe: Dangers in blogging
November 3rd, 2008 @ 10:08pm
By Nadine Wimmer
A growing number of Utahns are discovering serious drawbacks to a popular pastime: blogging. But we found some cases that may change the way you blog.

Lainie Ottley
Blogs help families share memories, but they can also make families a target for harassment, even stalking. But there's little law enforcement officers can do. It's simply post at your own peril.
A crazy birthday haircut documented on a family blog. His mom never dreamed their Mohawk memory would end up making him look like a member of the Hitler Youth on someone else's blog.
"We were really upset," blogger Lainie Ottley said. "For me, it's a huge offense."
She not only felt violated, but afraid of the association with neo-Nazis.
"Given the verbiage with the picture, we felt like it had created a pretty dangerous situation," Ottley said.
But when she called police, she learned there's not a thing they can do.
"That's some of the frustration, almost daily, when I take these calls," said Rhett McQuist, with Utah's Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force. "Right now, the laws haven't caught up with technology."

For another blogger, who did not want to be identified, the peril came not from pictures, but postings. "We had had no idea who it was," she said.
Degrading comments turned into more than a dozen threats and insults a day posted to her family's blog. "We just felt harassed and started to feel unsafe because of what was written," she said.
She and her husband eventually hired an attorney, filed a lawsuit, subpoenaed Google and were shocked to discover their stalker was a close family member. "It wrecked my trust in people, still does. And it makes you question everything," she said.
Those tough experiences get at the heart of what appeals to most bloggers: posting pictures of your children and making them accessible for family and friends. But how much information is too much?
We surfed blogs and found first and last names, birth dates for an entire, a countdown to the family Disneyland vacation, information on a husband's deployment to Iraq and a slide show of the inside of someone's house.

All this makes it easy, in many cases, for us to go from blogsite to blogger's doorstep in a few computer clicks.
It's just not worth the risk for these bloggers. "If you're going to do it, just know there's no way to keep it completely safe," Ottley said.
Criminal investigators say to Stay Safe, bottom line, don't post pictures of children online. You should also protect your blogsite with a password.
They also say guard information like your address. We saw pictures where the house address was visible.
Finally, adjust settings on your blog that protect your identity and make you unsearchable.

Oh!--I had this forwarded to me! It scared me and didn't at the same time. I keep a VERY close eye on who visits my blog, where they came from, and how they got there----but because I started blogging before I knew about any of this "safety stuff"--it is a frightening thing. I'm just not sure how to change mine without "changing" it. I mean--it would be like taking The Office off the air, renaming the show and everybody on it, and trying to bring it back with the boss Mark Snott, and "Joe" and "Patsy"--the cute couple, and weird guy "Edgar". Anyway--now I'm rambling---just justifying not taking the effort right now I guess ;)!

I figure that as long as I don't post on Ava's or our actual birthday, and am not dumb enough to put my address on there- there's not too much information that I wouldn't want someone to have about me.

It really bugs me when people have private blogs- blogging is about sharing. But if I ever get creepos on there- I'd probably go private too.

I agree with Heather. It's a weird thing for me because I do have somewhat of a high profile job, but I haven't run into problems (except one little one...) so I'm not gonna worry about it. I love my blog. I love other peoples blogs. :-)

Ok, this freaks me out! Is there anything we can do without putting our kids and family in danger, it's such a joke! Sorry my phone hanged up on you, I'll try and call you later when it's charged up a little more.

Well that's a little scarey. I put off posting pictures of the grandkids but decided to do it last week. And look how easy it was for you guys to find me. We live in a crazy world. Hopefully all will be well. Mimi

Well, this article is what made me decide to go private, oddly enough. I actually thought that because I had site meter that I would be fine, but then just recently I had a weird comment from a weird person, who would not identify them selves. I tried to not let it bother me, but after reading this article it made me think twice. So I might be paranoid, but as of right now I am playing it safe. I might go back to not being private in a couple of months or so, but not anytime soon;-(

YOu asked what kind of countertops I had-----it's granite--but a granite cap that they install over your existing countertops. About half the price of a slab, but with all the same benefits (heat resistant, no scratching, etc.). I LOVE them!

Also--my "secret message" was just about baseball! ha! ha! I'm much more geeky than cool. Do you want to know what your name would be in the secret language though? *Iais'enieu*. Yup. That's it. Just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it :)?!

Hope you're having a great weekend!

Thanks for the heads up. Some people just have no sense.
