Hillary's Victory Speech in Kentucky

She's starting now. I'll live-blog.

She's grateful. I want to say a special word about Ted Kennedy. He is one of the greatest progressive leaders in our party's history. He's my friend and inspiration and he's a hero to millions whose lives he has bettered. I'm proud to have stood by him in the Senate to provide health care and prevent discrimination against the sick. But that's just a snippet of his five decades in public service. He's been with us for our fight and we are with him for his.

Tonight we've achieved an important victory. Some of have said the campaign is over, your vote doesn't count. That didn't stop you. You've never given up on me because you know I'll never give up on you.

This is one of the closest races in modern history. We're winning the popular vote and I'm more determined than ever to keep going.[ More...]

Obama and I will continue to go toe to toe. I need your help. Go to HillaryClinton.com.

We've made it this far, so go there and give. (Bill and Chelsea are laughing with big smiles at that comment in the audience.)

We have to elect a nominee who is best positioned to win in November.

Crowd is chanting "Hillary, Hillary."

Talks about the people who don't make the news...the truckers, waitresses, nurses, etc.

Everyone deserves a shot at the American dream. We are in this race because this century poses new challenges. If we only had a President ready, willing and able to lead.

We believe America is worth fighting for. I've fought the only way I know how, by never giving up and never giving in. I've done it because I believe passionately the Democrats must take back the White House and end Republican rule.

I'm going on to S.Dakota, Montana and Puerto Rico. And to stick up for the 2.3 million in FL and MI who deserve to have their votes counted.

I'm going to go on until we have a nominee, whoever she may be.

Kentucky has a knack for picking Presidents. It voted for Bill Clinton twice. As KY goes, so goes the nation.

Neither Obama nor I have won the 2,210 delegates necessary out of 4,400 to win. Neither of us will have that number on June 3. The party will then have a tough choice. Who's ready to lead at the top of the ticket?

Tells voters to keep fighting. That's what she is going to do.

I am in this race to fight for your future. Whatever happens, I'll work as hard as I can to elect a Democrat this fall.

Gives a history of "United We Stand." We will come together as a party united by common values. United in service, of hopes and dreams, that know no boundaries of race, gender, etc.

We won't just unite our party, we will unite our country and make sure America's best years are yet to come.

Thank you and G-d Bless.

I thought she was simply amazing tonight and so inspiring!
She was vigorous, warm, determined, gracious, tenacious, I can't say enough good words, but I'll sum it all up as "Presidential" in the best sense!

I noticed she used the word "gender."
She spoke about the Presidency as the highest "glass ceiling" of them all.
And she said, nominee whoever "she" may be.

I wonder if she would done better if she'd spoken more about women and gender earlier.  Hard to tell - given the current climate of sexism and misogyny.  I really don't know. Maybe now that she's established her "toughness" and dare I say    "balls-iness", she can afford to acknowledge the  woman issue.  In any case, for this unbowed middle-aged feminist, it was good to hear these words from her tonight.

Just before Hillary spoke, Begala said, "and let the first be the last" and recommended Michigan and Florida re-vote after Puerto Rico!  Why not??  That would settle it once and for all and there could be no grousing from either side about a compromised compromise.  The Obama guys were complaining about the unfairness of the current vote totals so how could they complain about a re-do where all the votes counted?  The punishment would be that the states who sought to be first would be the very last to vote.  Imagine the publicity and voter turnout!  It would so energize an already energized Democratic electorate.  And we need those states in November!  We know there is money available to fund it.  It's the best idea I've heard on the situation.  Pass it on!!!!

My sister is a paid staffer with the Clinton campaign. She's not senior staff, but she is high enough up that she has conference calls with the Senator (she even got me in to sit on stage and meet her at a rally).  I haven't said anything before, because it didn't seem appropriate, but it just warms my heart to feel the love here for HRC.  (Disclosure:  My first choice was not HRC, but Richardson - go ahead - laugh).

I hope you don't mind, but I have copied some of your comments here and sent them to my sister, asking her to pass them along to the appropriate people, so HRC can see that we are still behind her.

I initially liked Richardson as well.  I sent him $50 early in the primary season. Then he proceeded to bomb out in the debates, and I realized he would be a disaster.  Final straw for me was his abysmal performance in the LOGO debate, where he said something stupid to the effect that being gay is a choice.

Then I dithered for awhile between Edwards and Hillary, but she just knocked my socks off with her strong debate performances.  I'm so sick of weak, wimpy, effete Dem candidates who can't connect with the people.  She's the one I've been waiting for.

I'm considering a cot next to the computer.  Heck, on Tuesday primary nights, I don't hit the bed 'til hours after he does, anyway.  And if he says a thing, I'll send him this thread and tell him that we all have to make sacrifices for Hillary.

"Envelope stuffers" Jeez, I hate this diminishment not only of Clinton as candidate but the continual effort to paint her votership as "wrong" in some way.

Well at least she didn't flat out call the crowd racists.

(Presumably unlike Obama's audiences: portrayed as idealistic, modern, hip and drawn to his magical charisma. Newwwwwwp, no envelope stuffers there!)

I haven't seen the recording or checked the transcript on this, but earlier Donna Brazile was damning Sen Clinton's performance with faint praise. The Dems need to stop using her as a party spokeswoman, since she's asked to speak on behalf of HRC and BO but often signals to the rest of the panel that the anti-HRC swarm is on.

It's disgusting. I know it's a cliche that the Dems are self-immolating, but Brazile long ago lost any right to represent the party, and she should be tossed off the Roolz committee as an Obama mole.

Hillary as always was inspirational and was obviously speaking to the supers.  I did not get a sense that she was resigned to being the VP.  While such would be historic, assuming Obama could carry the top rung (a big assumption), I hope she stays in the Senate.  The VP is generally a nothing job (Cheney is the exception).  Given her popular vote total at the end of this primary season, she'll have a lot of clout nationally and she can make that work to her advantage in the Senate leadership structure.  Her star is rising - she should not hitch to something which may just be a flash in the pan, imho.  Hillary has really done a lot for her image over this primary season.  I supported her from the get-go b/c of her experience, but I really like her now.  I suspect I am not the only one who has gone from being a supporter to a genuine fan.

Best wishes to Sen. Kenneday and to Gov. Patterson too.

BTW, I really hate the cable news networks.  I only watch enough on primary nights to be sure I don't miss Hillary's speeches.  I am far happier person since I gave up my cable news habit.  If I never hear Donna Brazile again, I'll be really, really happy.

Michael Beschloss said tonight that Hillary is five times a better candidate today than she was in January (I think that was his comparison time frame). He added that Obama was also better, but it was clear he was deeply impressed with how much Hillary has improved her connection with voters.

He also said the plusses of the long primary outweigh any negatives for the Dems. He said the frontloading of the primary system for the Dems has lead to some less than stellar candidates in terms of how well they can campaign.

NBC did nothing but ridicule, question, and (none / 0) (#135)

    criticize Hillary after the Speech.

I had to switch off again.

If Fox is the GOP channel NBC really is the Obama channel. I only listened a few minutes and and the put-downs came hard and fast. I didn't hear them say one single positive thing about Hillary.

Basically assuring each other that there is no way HC can win and counting the ways she was wrong. They even laughed out loud when ridiculing HC's speech. It is v. upsetting.

This has to be the worst campaign coverage ever in USA history.

No wonder Obama believes he will be President in a few months.

    I did too (none / 0) (#143)

Could not take Matthews going on about evil Clintonian 'positioning' and 'triangulation'.  Because, you see, Obama is the only pure man.

I wish I knew what channel Fox was - maybe I would try them.  I'll have to look it up some day, Right now it is CNN with the sound off.

And you are absolutely right.  Even by KO and Matthews' standards, it was a disgusting display tonight.  Truly not a positive word.  Then, while driving home, I stupidly listened to Malloy on Talk Left Radio (and had to hear a hateful ad from Randi Rhodes).  It is unbelievable to me that these so-called leftie Democrats are still gleefully tearing into Hillary Clinton's character, her campaign, and her supporters.  Truly, she never had a chance.  The fact that she is hanging in because of the voters there is an amazing testament to her as a person.

I really suggest they start learning how to spew that vitriol towards McCain and the Republicans or they will all be sorely disappointed.

Wolfe: contrasts Oregon voters 'sophisticated' (none / 0) (#137)

... compared to KY doofuses who supported Clinton.

Why? Oregon voters know how to mail stuff in. Wow.

No wonder these awesomely intelligent voters are down with the Unity Pony Express!, a revolutionary new technology.

Someday, Hillary supporting creativity-challenged dumb clucks will snail their way into relevence.

    I had a VERY strong sense (none / 0) (#147)

as I listened to her speech, and the words from both camps this week, the Hillary and Obama have made a deal. My prediction: she will either be VP or she will hand pick the candidate.

Knowing our girl she will drive a very hard bargain in terms of portfolio if she does sign on as VP, because Obama knows that in order to win he has to have her supporters.

I am not convinced that I would support a "Unity Ticket"-that remains for Obama to close the deal. I will NOT vote for him under any circumstancesif she is not on the ticket, though. I will drop my Dem affiliation.

You must have been listening to a different speech than the one I heard.  She made no statement that I would read as anything other than PERSEVERING, PUSHING AHEAD.  Did you hear GIVING UP?????   No. No.

Politics is politics, and most of all our girl wants to win. She knows that the obstacles to the nomination are all but insurmountable. and as her consultant said, she's almost out of runway.

she deserves this vastly more than Obama, for her dedication, her smarts, her hard work. Sadly I do not think that she will get the nomination. I think she knows it too. there has been a sea change in the campaigns in the last several days-a subtle but immense shift in tone. I think Obama sees the writing on the wall too-that he can win the nomination with his primary and caucus stunts, but he's gonna blow the GE without her wholehearted support.

one of my friends who was an early donor to the campaign says that there are negotiations underway with the Gov of NY to appoint Bill to replace her in the Senate-to keep him out from underfoot in the WH, so to speak-and put her in as VP. still not sure I can vote for Obama for president though,
