Warner Bros. to Offer Programming on Joost

This one nearly slipped under the radar, and given the growing list of Joost Partners I could flippantly say Joost has yet another content partner.

The latest deal for the streaming TV platform sees Warner Bros content including WBTV: SCI-FI FIX and WBTV: Before They Were Mega Stars being offered exclusively online with Joost.

WBTV: SCI-FI FIX will feature shows including the Adventures of Briscoe County, Aquaman, Babylon 5, Crusade, Human Target, Invasion, Max Headroom, My Favorite Martian, Prey, Time Trax and V.

The WBTV: Before They Were Mega Stars channel includes shows from the past that feature today’s big stars.

The increasing range of content undoubtedly makes the service more compelling, and yet despite having been a beta tester for some time, I find it difficult to get excited about the service. I know the tech behind it is fairly cool, and yet from the users perspective if I want to watch television I’d rather sit on my lounge, put my feet up and watch on 40 inches of 1080p HD FTA glory than through the occasionally pixilated and choppy picture I get from Joost here in Australia, but maybe it’s just me. By all means, convince me otherwise in the comments.

I can not convince you either way because the service still appears to be broken. Instead of announcing more content to drum up press everyday they need to get the site working properly.

I don’t know, but I like what they’re doing. They seem to have something rather compelling that they’re telling potential partners.

I have no doubt that Joost has as much ability to iron out the technical aspects as anyone else, but what they have over a lot of other places is enough content to maybe last. I don’t know how many services I’ve joined that I exhausted after a weekend.

I totally agree on what you said in the last paragraph. Although I like Joost, it’s concept and what they are doing, I rather watch TV in living room. As I wrote in my blog (http://dlinsin.blogspot.com/2007/04/joost-reloaded.html) they only way I can imagine using Joost is in front of my TV.

I run Joost on my Macbook connected to my TV. Computers in the lounge is the way of the future so I don’t see Joost facing such a problem. Even the Macbook remote control works :-)

Hi Duncan,

Any chance you could send a Joost invite my way? I’d love to check it out: lorenz (at) bluelavatech (dot) com.

Thanks a lot!

Cheers,

Lorenz

I’m running Joost connected to my TV, and while the idea is great, I can’t get it working properly at all. Either my computer is not fast enough or my connection is not fast enough (or possibly my link from Australia is not good enough either), but it’s just not been a compelling experience for me yet, even though I know it probably should be.

I killed TV from my home some years ago.
now I just watch podcasts, DVD’s, torrents and online videos.

and if you watch Joost from your coach, you’ll not see the pixelated stuff.

It only needs a Joost remote to be perfect.

I would much prefer to watch TV on my desktop, assuming I can select what shows to watch when I want to watch them. I haven’t tried Joost yet, but I’ve got high hopes!

I watch it on my TV as well and for regular non-HD tv’s the quality is fine and besided getting about 2 choppy minutes after starting up it looks fine. The connection at home isn’t that fast (and its in Israel). I look forward to have it work and through out my satellite box. I download most of my stuff anyway and only watch live stuff and news on the regular channels (which are mostly useless).

Joost is brilliant, I like watching TV when I come back home, late after work. With joost, I Zap the way I surf the Internet, that’s the major added value. I have something in mind and I look it up, there is no way you get that on regular tv.

i have no problem watching long form content on my laptop. the issue i have with joost is choopy video, my connection never seems to be good enough. puuuuuulease. ok.

Id be interested to hear what sort of connections people were using with it as well: I’m running 2mb cable (as quick as I can get) and at times it’s useless with Joost.

Yeahh quality is not so good but the idea is perfect, I hope joost will improve quality.

I am using Joost from Germany and have a hard time finding anything worth watching. National Geographic shows used to be on, but have disappeared a couple of months ago…

Do US users see more channels than those from abroad?

I’m watching Joost on a 2Mb DSL connection in Ireland and have had few problems with freezing or pixellation. I really love the service and am lucky enough to have my eclectic tastes well represented by their choice in channels.

I have a 10mb down cable line and it runs just great. Like you said, I’d love to see this in the living room and in higher quality before I get excited about it though.

Nopefully Joost will introduce a HD stream in the near future after its launch. Something like gametrailer.com’s HD, which is about 3.6mbps and 1280×720.

Let’s be realistic here. How many people actually have a connection fast enough to support real time HD video? I’d say very few since even the current quality is choppy on many users.

I’d say that the quality is good enough now and I hope that it’ll start working more smoothly in the future.

Can I ask when we can expect to see some of the content from all these partners? Is it there already? I connect to Joost from Japan so I could believe licensing restrictions prevent us getting all the cool stuff but from what I’ve seen there are a lot of content producers ‘talking’ about putting their content on Joost and very few actually doing it.

Joost may be pushing ISPs to provide better quality bandwidths ;)

I live in the middle of nowhere. Until recently, the only television I could watch was limited to agricultural scenery and newscasts telling me that again nothing exciting happened today.

Over the last year the situation improved a lot with cable, which now offers channels like Euronews and Eurosport, but we are still lacking on the entertainment side of things.

More options are only welcome. If I have to use my laptop instead of the TV set, so be it.

Joost boom when they roll out the hardware version. I would expect them keep working on the software beta for another 12 months and then box the software into a hardware device to plug in directly into the TV.

The simple fact that you need to download a client will kill Joost.

I have also been a beta tester for quite a while and I find it hard to get excited. I go to vdc.com and watch “virtual digital cable” and it looks OK. But for sure if I just want to watch TV (and I am at home) then my Tivo is what I love.

But I think Joost is being smart. The speeds will improve, the connections to the TV will become more native, and Joost will have, in the mean time, locked in a large amount of content that will put them in the lead.

Of course, the other model is that eventually good infrastructure is available to everyone and through search and favorites you can create your own set of programs with no limitations and no need for the gatekeeper.

IS Joost the “Clown Co.” ? ….

Invasion? You mean that show that I watched every week but never got a second season? How nice of them: they’re going to create even more victims of the open ending.

I really want to check out this site. Could someone send me an invite!

:)

op

All in all, it seems to have pretty good quality on a 2-6MB cable connection (comcast), but sometimes it takes a long time to load. I have little issue once the show starts. Most of the controls are intuitive and (fairly) responsive. Just because it is a download now, doesn’t mean it won’t be a plugin in the future (does anyone with more technical knowledge know why it isn’t?).

They still need more programming though; comedycentral doesn’t have any of my favs, so I guess it is still the “motherload” for now (ugh!).

btw, if you want an invite you gotta leave some place to send it, ’cause it’s real easy.

If you can watch it on your TV, you will. If you are someplace where you can’t watch TV but you can watch Joost, you’ll watch it on Joost. If you are someplace where you can’t watch TV or Joost, maybe you’ll watch it with one of our platforms.

I hope deals like this will add more value to Joost. I’ve been a beta tester for the last 7 months and I’m still waiting for some really interesting channels.

If anyone needs an invite feel free to drop by my blog and ask for one ;)

No problems over RoadRunner here in New York. I think the real value here would be for Joost to link-up with TiVo like Amazon did recently. Then, you can watch low quality over the net or DVD quality via TiVo. There’s probably more synergy here than I can think of. Heck, if they did that then you could cancel cable TV and just use Joost/TiVo. Roll your own Fall line-up!

Well if Joost is going to offer Football Broadcasting (upcoming UEFA Champions League Final for example) I will gladly give up my TV set to my wife and her Korean Drama.

Damn they are killing Google Youtube - May 8th, 2007 at 6:14 pm PDT

how can youtube win?

I have been testing joost for sometime. I like the quality.

I’ve got ADSL2 in Sydney (though it only gets about 6MB speed for some reason). But I’ve found it choppy and almost unwatchable, even though I like the promise. I’m suspecting the distance is as much of a factor as anything else.

And they’re not out to compete with YouTube at all, they’re about providing one set of customers (media companies) with a truly secure and user friendly way to program online, so they can then provide another set of programmers (the viewers) with a compelling experience. They’re really not even in the same market as YouTube (Joost isn’t doing anything with user-generated programming that I know of), so neither of them really have to worry much about the other.

I really dig the interface of Joost. It’s really a great concept. I have had both good and bad experiences with the actual video. I know that this will be one of the best players out there though, you can just feel it.

let me know your email…… i have few invites to give away…….

Overall my experience with joost has been 8/10

The only thing that will really kill Joost is if they become too much like TV. Like many others who have posted comments here, I’ve got a computer hooked up to the LCD in Living Room. I killed cable because I don’t like being inundated with advertising (even more so, I don’t like my kids watching commercials). Video Podcasts, YouTube, AppleTV, a Wii, surfing, etc has filled the cable hole nicely, and Joost is a welcome addition.

TV’s downfall is the that the ads are what TV execs consider the content. The shows are filler. If that happens with Joost…10 minutes of content (ads) and 20 minutes of mindless filler (shows) for every half hour…it’ll be dead (to me, anyway).
