mp3: built to spill - in the morning
after admitting perfect from now on would not be my chosen built to spill album to see performed live in its entirety, i was asked what album i'd prefer. the answer, without a doubt, is there's nothing wrong with love. following the tour announcement, i realized that many people seem to hold the opinion that perfect from now on is martsch's best work... which surprised me in that i had never thought of the album that way before.
i like perfect from now on a lot, but in making a list of my top 100 albums last august it honestly never even crossed my mind. there's nothing wrong with love ,on the other hand, came in pretty strong at #40 and keep it like a secret just barely edged in at #94. perfect from now on was nowhere in sight and it will stay that way when the list is updated this august .
but besides my opinion that it is not actually their best work, i feel like perfect from now on is best suited for a particular mood. one which is both unlikely to be shared by the majority of bts fans and which probably won't make for an optimal live experience. there isn't a single song on the album that i wouldn't be happy to hear the band play at a regular show, but all of them at once, in succession? things really might start to drag on after a while, especially considering the band's tendency to extend songs well beyond their studio cut times.
but there's nothing wrong with love? it's got much better pacing, better energy... better songs. fucking amazing songs. one after another. crashing and bleeding into each other. never giving the listener a chance at a break. there would be no trips to the restroom during this show... there's not one minute i could stand to miss.there's absolutely nothing wrong with there's nothing wrong with love in my mind.
perfect from now on is a pretty good album too... but for me at least, on an average night, it's got a bathroom break every ten minutes. i think it's cool what the band's doing, but i hope it's not the only time they do it. even you perfect from now on fans have got to admit, any show that starts with "in the morning" would have to work pretty hard to miss the mark.
