One Person's Smut is Another Person's Morning Latte

A Christian group based in San Diego found grounds for outrage over the new retro-style logo for Starbucks Coffee.


The Resistance says the new image "has a naked woman on it with her legs spread like a prostitute," Mark Dice, founder of the group, said in a news release. "Need I say more? It's extremely poor taste, and the company might as well call themselves Slutbucks."


The group, which claims more than 3,000 members nationwide and has found a place on the fringe advancing various conspiracy theories, is calling for a national boycott of the coffee-selling giant.


The logo will run on Starbucks cups for "several more weeks," said company spokeswoman Bridget Baker, and will live on as the logo for Pike Place bags of coffee.


The image is a less-revealing version of what the chain used for many years, starting when it first opened in Seattle in 1971. That original logo was resurrected in its Northwest outlets for a time in 2006 to mark the chain's 35th anniversary.

I didn't put this in Three Things since I figure that there is nobody here crazy enough to buy a word that this fringe Christian group is saying. Who the fuck thinks the above logo looks like a prostitute spreading her legs? Even if it were a woman doing so, what makes said woman a prostitute? A slut maybe, but a prostitute no.Truth be told, it looks more like a mirmaid with a split bottom than anything else.

People who think this obscene have some really creative minds. No matter how hard I look at it, I can't even get where they are coming from.

Now if she was naked and bent over a counter in stilettos, that would be a whole different story.

Obscene? No. Pretentious? Very Much. Starbucks is the only place I know of where drug addicted drop outs serving you coffee look down their noses at you.

That was a great link! Interesting. Also at the bottom of that page is a related link to a 2005 blog at Dead Programmer's Cafe titled: "How the Starbucks Siren Became Less Naughty" There is an update to the blog with info on the history from the designer behind the green logo.

These type people just irk me.

By the way I know many a good prostitute and many retired prostitutes of which I am a card carrying member of that club and I can assure you I have never seen anyone of us either active or retired who looks a think like that.


I honestly believe that sometimes some of these people just want to be seen and heard. Yet at the same time they do not want to take on a actual cause because well that would require they actually put time, effort, thought, and money into it. Not to mention people would actually expect them to do some good.
So they take on stupid stuff like this so they can be seen and get their 15 seconds of fame, feel important, and still not have to do a damn thing in life.
