ROCK HILL, S.C. -- An elderly woman abused in her own home for an entire year -- that's what police say was happening to a Rock Hill woman.
Investigators say 78-year-old Mildred Ledbetter was covered in bruises and sores when the allegations finally surfaced.
The man accused of abusing her is also the man who police say considered Ledbetter his own grandmother. Police call the abuse heartbreaking because it covers all types of abuse -- physical, mental and financial.
Some neighbors were worried that something bad was happening to Ledbetter.
"I try to mind my own business but when you see things, you know -- I mean, I can add and subtract and multiply," says Mamie McClurkin.
"She's so little. Lord, she's so little and I was afraid one day he might hit her and hurt her," she said.
The "he" she is talking about is 20-year-old Timothy Rockholt Jr. Mrs. Ledbetter considered him a grandson after raising his mother.
"He didn't have anywhere to stay and she tried to help him," says McClurkin.
Police say he moved in a year ago and began abusing his grandma. Family members called police Wednesday after finding bruises, scrapes and sores on her arms, legs and face.
