Muriel Interviews Susan Collin Marks; VP of Search For Common Ground

Muriel and Susan have a delightful conversation about Search for Common Ground. Susan Collin Marks is the Vice President of this organization.
Search for Common Ground (SFCG) is an international non-governmental organization headquartered in Washington, DC. Since 1982, we have been working to transform the way the world deals with conflict: away from adversarial confrontation, towards cooperative solutions. Our organizational slogan, coined by a leader of South Africa’s African National Congress, is understand the differences, act on the commonalities.
When SFCG began 25 years ago, we had just two employees, a handful of supporters, and a powerful vision. Now we have 350 staff working out of offices in Angola, Belgium, Burundi, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Indonesia, Liberia, Macedonia, Middle East (with offices in Jerusalem and representation in Amman), Morocco, Nepal, Sierra Leone, Ukraine, and the USA. Thousands of people are directly involved in our programs, and we reach millions more through our media projects.
SFCG is engaged in a long-term process of incremental transformation. No matter how ambitious our goals, we know we can only move forward one step at a time. So we make long-term commitments. We seek cross-cultural integration of indigenous and international concepts of conflict prevention. We work with partners on the ground to strengthen local capacity to deal with conflict.
Our toolbox contains a wide variety of techniques, ranging from traditional means such as mediation, facilitation, negotiation, shuttle diplomacy, back channel talks, training and court-based mediation, to innovations like common ground media, athletic exchanges, use of music, theatre, and dance, film festivals, policy forums, polling, community organizing, and multi-ethnic kindergartens.
