Values talks about “life” in general. It is abstract when we just say, “Values.” It needs to be internalized by my students and applied to their lives as young adults. It must be meaningful and effective. We started our topics about the subject itself last month and I was happy of their responses after they were able to identify what are the basic values they need as students. But still, I find them indifferent sometimes… I am referring to my second year students. Though not all of them, their are students from different sections who can express their thoughts, feelings and emotions towards life, about what they have learned by writing them in their journal Notebook. I promise them not to ask major projects from them as long as they can provide me of their weekly reflection based from the guidelines I gave them. Through their journal notebooks, I was able to follow up their concerns, process the challenges they experienced by writing my own response and reflection at the end of their entry. I asked them to write even their prayer at the moment they reflected… My prayers was granted also through their reflection notebooks. Gradually, I learned to understand why some of them behaves badly in the class and sometimes, they are the ones who distract me and their classmates during discussions and classroom activities.

The challenges I have encountered as a Values teacher is to teach by example and to make our everyday meetings alive and meaningful to them. Maybe I am lucky enough to have many experiences from my formation as a religious brother and being exposed to different walks in life; from Jolo, Sulu to Luzon, from orphanages to home for the aged, from Payatas dumpsite to Balubad settlement areas, from formal school to formation houses. These exposures and experiences helped me to relate with them the different outlooks of different people I encountered, thus different values we can talk about, too. Teaching by example is challenging in a sense that, they must see the value I am trying to live so that they will be able to experience what I am trying to share to them. One instance, I told them that I am not worthy to be their Values teacher because we are all learners in life… and they, in some ways, agreed.

With my first year of teaching as a young Marist Brother, maybe God is telling me to be faithful and everything will be in order according to his plan for me. Saint Marcellin Champagnat love of children always tells me to be fair with the students that are entrusted to me. I hope and I pray that I will persevere, have an understanding heart and mind to the students…

N.B.: This reflection was written following the same format I gave to my students on how to write their own reflection entries.

Today, Br. Cristino Sta. Ana made his perpetual profession to live the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience in the religious family of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He is so generous in accepting the call to “follow” Christ’s call with freedom and faith. We all believe, as religious people, that God chooses individual men and women, calling them by name, transforming them more deeply for mission.

The final profession of Br. Cris today was celebrated with joy as one family by all present Lay mission partners, friends, relatives and religious people. We were grateful of Fr. Pat Muckian, SM as the main celebrant during the Eucharist.

Br. Manuel de Leon, FMS happily received Br. Cris’ profession during the rite. The General Superior, Br. Sean Sammon, FMS sent Br. Manuel as his delegate since he is the Brother Provincial of the new East-Asia Province. After Br. Cris pronounced his profession, he received the crucifix which is the symbol of his profession of perpetual vows. he also signed the Account of Perpetual Profession.

At present he is assigned at Notre Dame of Marbel University. He works with the people at Physical Plant and supervise the security of the school. He is with the other Brothers in the community; Br. Willy, the School President, Br. Brix, the Assistant to the President, Br. Edgar, the superior of the community, and Br. Danny.

YOUNG BROTHERS’ MEETING

Part of formation program is the meeting of all temporary professed brothers in the Philippine Sector. Yesterday, Br. Manny called all temporary professed brothers to meet at the Provincial Center. We were welcomed by the Brother Provincial and Brothers Lindley and Rustico, members of the Formation Team. We shared our experiences in general as young brothers assigned in different areas of our apostolate as Marist Brothers. I am thankful of this event as an inspiration for me and at the same time, to have people around me, supporting me and journeying with me in my difficulties and consolations in my first year of being in the active ministry. The Marist Context was presented also by Br. Manny, for us to be aware and look at the wider perspective of what is happening in East-Asia. We ended with a closing prayer, wrapping all our meaningful experiences, asking for guidance and enlightenment until we meet again for sharing…

For many days of being busy with my new school assignment, I realized that there are many things I would like to blog about. I was absorbed with many tasks as a new teacher.

First, as a subject teacher. As expected, I was assigned to teach Values (Religion) subject to first year and second year students; four sections of freshmen and three for sophomores. There are only two lesson plan preparation but with extra tasks, I always find myself busy with extra-curricular activities such as soccer coaching and moderating the Saint Marcellin Champagnat Club (that include blogging and bloghopping). I can’t even find a good time to finish my assignment given by Br. John Tan, the NDDU President; sorry bigbro, I’m still looking for chances to finish it. At least this time, I had always the time to visit NDKC Farm to spend some time of reflecting and making lesson plans. The place is a quiet place where I can focus and be with myself alone after week-long of teaching. Thus, little rest at the farm is indeed a good escapade for a while during weekend.

The students I have are being entrusted to me and they have the right to be educated. They come to school and be taught with good values. Values Education subject is the most difficult subject; that’s my opinion. It’s always about life, values, religion, ethics and morals. Sometimes, I find myself unworthy for this task but it is a challenge that help me grow and become better person. I also learned form the lessons I presented. For three weeks already, we are now learning more about Christ’s birth, baptism and mission. Now, I can use what I have learned from Marist Asia-Pacific Center, IFRS and Mary Hill School of Theology in Manila. Most of what I introduced to my students are from my notes last year. I am thankful enough that most of the time, the second year students participate and listen well to our topic. I am challenged to be creative and innovative in presentting our lesson. Discipline is not a big deal, maybe because they are more respectful to the Brothers like me than to other teachers.

Second, as SMC class adviser (Saint Marcellin Champagnat section). This is composed 0f 52 second year students (good students). I was hesitant at first to be their adviser. And yet, founded with what Marcellin’s teaching, I must accept the challenge especially that SMC class is always considered as special class for it bears the name of the Founders of the Marist Brothers who run the school. One unique way of dealing with them is through accompaniment. I learned this from my formation that until now, it is still very effective in journeying with others. I applied it to my advisory class; a unique one that other advisers don’t offer it. As usual, a group of seven students (I called them alphabetically) share their academic struggles and how are they in my class. I also make follow up about their study habit at home and if inspired, I let them share to the group about their family. Everytime we have a group accompaniment, a new friendship is always being created among the class; this made me happy and inspired…

I was also given extra tasks. Coaching soccer is really tough. They need somebody who is a real coach, but that’s not me. I am alwasy with them during drills and practices but sometimes, I have to attend to my SMC club and faculty meetings, too. Aside from those tasks, I am getting anxious with the incoming Vocation Month of September. I just attended the Vocation Promotion Workers Meeting at Bishop Palace and again, another tasks were given to me. Here at the community, I was tasked by the superior to be the Local Vocation Promoter (LVP). Whew! Well, those are call of the time for me as a Marist Brother.

Just this morning, I had a chance to call Asilo de San Vicente de Paul, a home for street children located at U.N. Avenue in Paco, Manila. I called up the line of Ms. Neri directly which she answered quickly. I was happy to know that those children whom I was with every Saturday and Sunday are doing well (They were present during my graduation last October 2007). I fact, I was able to talk with Jomar, the eldest among my student-friends. He was very eager telling me that he made to be the top three among the graduating pupils last March. I was very happy that we gained something important for him after many weeks of learning together. His younger brother, Joshua, was doing good also in the school. I miss their company so much… but I am resolved with what our Constitution and Statutes says, “We leave the place when we are no longer needed…” Thanks to Marcellin for teaching his Brothers, “In order to teach children, you must love them equally…”

That was an incredible weekend I had in Davao City. After sharing our Personal Life Plans, we planned for our community and discussed our finances. As we celebrate our being a new community for this school year, we also spent a meal outside the retreat house and watch a movie. That was last weekend.

After few days, Br.
Incredible weekend for all teaching and non-teaching Lay Mission partners of NDKC as they attend to a 3-day institutional retreat held at Revier Retreat House in Catalunan Grande, Davao City. Same with NDKC students, they listened to Br. Teofilo. A short workshop was done and sharing of ideas and reflections afterward.

Father Edgar Javier, SVD generously shared his time and effort to be the retreat master of the Lay Mission Partners. It was not only about the mission of being Marist teachers but on how to understand the situations of most students these days. He shared his experiences as missionary in the Pacific region as he also studied different religions. He is an anthropologist from Institutute of Religious Life in Asia (ICLA) in Quezon City. He is still energetic and full of insight as he was the last time we met in Koronadal City. He was my teacher in Missiology last summer of 2007 in Notre Dame of Marbel University.

Today is his feast day. Father Champagnat is the founder of the Little Brothers of Mary know as Marist Brothers of the Schools (FMS) in France. He was one of the pillars of Marist Fathers. More about Father Champagnat by Brother Sean Sammon, the Superior General of the Marist Brothers…

Year of Spirituality (Marist Apostolic Spirituality, MAS)

This year also, the Marist Brothers celebrate the Year of Spirituality, the Marist Apostlic Spirituality. It started last July 10, 2007 and will end this coming July 10, 2008. This is the spirituality that is being drawn from the spirituality of Saint Marcellin. A book, “WATER FROM THE ROCK - Marist Spirituality was produced to elaborate this spirituality. This includes the spirituality of presence, spirituality of dialogue, kenoric spirituality (empty-ing) and spirituality of reconciliation and harmony. Various activities on formation of Lay partners and Brothers were done during this year with a hope that this apostolic spirituality is being lived as followers of Saint Marcellin Champagnat.

Locally, the Champagnat Movement for Marist Family (CMMF) here at Notre Dame of Kidapawan College celebrated the vigil feast day in honor of Saint Marcellin Champagnat. A para-liturgy and sharing of experiences were done with so much inspiration from the founder and from the Brothers whom they worked and still working with as Mission Partners. We reflected

Diamond Jubilee of Marist presence in the Philippines

Today, feast day of the founder, the Diamond Jubilee celebration is launched here in the Philippines. Sixty years of Marist presence is indeed a grace from God’s faithfulness to the people, especially the least favored here in the Philippines. The first four Marist Brothers left New York in 1948 to start the new mission here in Mindanao through the invitation of Bishop Gerard Mongeau of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate Fathers who came here first. Brothers Joseph Damian Teston, Herbert Dumont, Edmund Paradis, and Peter Leonard, FMS took over Notre Dame of Cotabato Boys Department (NDC).

Summer vacation has just ended and the school days are fast approaching. Here in Kidapawan City, though I can’t say that I feel totally at home here, I found myself quite busy preparing myself with my new assignment. No more time for escapade and recreation. Just this week, the Principal of Notre Dame of Kidapawan College, High School department, through his Assistant Principal, gave me the task for this school year. I will be handling an advisory class, the Saint Marcellin second year class. Aside from the advisory, they asked me to teach Values-Religion Subject for the first and second year students; which means, I will prepare two lesson plans for a week. Another taks is to moderate a student organization. This is not just an ordinary club for me but a special organization: the Saint Marcellin Champagnat Club. I consider this as not an easy task but a challenging one for a Marist Brother.

Since there are few days remaining before classes start, the Guidance office facilitated a seminar-workshop for all the faculty and staff. Ms. Framer Cristy Mella, a psychologist by profession gave us inputs and strategies on handling adolescents in today’s time. We started the workshop by putting our observations in and outside the campus regarding with the adolescents. Though the reports of each group were substantial, Ms. Mella began with the nature of the young adolescents. This is the stage when the adolescents faces psychological crisis; when they ask questions like, “Who am I and what is my goal in life?” It is an important, crucial, transitional period for them, when they search for identity. She further elaborated the “identity versus role confusion” of Erikson’s theory. Most of the teachers concluded that most of the young ones are misunderstood by most adults.

[ad#250-by-250]

Ms. Mella challenged us to be creative and innovative with our strategies in teaching. We must engage them into more participative learning like workshops, story-telling and movie viewing. To work in partnership with the parents of the students plays a vital role in monitoring their achievements and difficulties. The students themselves are to work with their group in order to learn from one another.

I got insights from my Marist formation: to accompany then in their life’s journey. Maybe a group sharing per group is possible once a week. Still, the Marist education guided by the principle of Saint Marcellin Champagnat, “In order to teach children, you must love them equally.” I am hoping for a good school year for both teachers (include me, please…) and students.

I was even invited to go to Lake Agco to accompany the Brothers from Ad Gentes Program in Davao City. Ma’am Amy and her husband generously offered their time to be with us going to Lake Agco and to the resort near to it. Brother Roberto, who is not new to the place, introduced Brothers Agustin and Diego to Lake Agco which according to him, a fascinating, awesome place for those who are new to such kind of scenery of nature. Lake Agco is really awesome. Seeing a small pond of murky but boiling water and felt the hot steam, I was quite scared of going near the lake. It was all natural! I smell sulfur all around; steam and hot water bursting from the ground. Though little bit terrified upon realizing that I was standing at one of the outlet of the volcano, Mount Apo, I still felt excited that time.

A small resort was built near Lake Agco. A chilling cold swimming pool is just beside the large “hot bath tub.” Pipes were connected directly from Lake Agco to supply hot water with sulfuric odor. At Lake Agco itself, a small concreted pool is built where people may take a dip (just if you can resist the hot steam and water around the lake). Further above the lake is another hot spring and steaming outlets from the earth. As if hell is just beneath my feet! I like to go back to that place and have another sense of awe! It is really a place you must visit!

One sad thing I have noticed was the gradual destruction of the natural environment around Lake Agco. Commercialization, I would say, has negative impacts also unless mother nature is preserved in that area. At Lake Agco itself, empty plastic bottles are accumulating, spoiled slippers and sandals were just left behind and trees are also being cut for more parking areas for vehicles. The whole place, according to the Manobo kid I met, is considered a sacred place, thus noise must be minimized so that the spirits may not mislead those who lose their trails on the mountain. Those who are planning to go to Lake Agco, please be sensitive to others, be respectful of the sacredness of the place and be responsible with your own rubbish.

I’ve been here in Kidapawan City many times, passing by the Marist Brothers’ community at Notre Dame of Kidapawan College. Since I was talking already about assignments few weeks ago, I have now the gut to confirm that I am officially sent by my Superior as one of the members of the school community here at NDKC, Kidapawan City.

While watching TV yesterday, I was told to come down and be ready to leave Gen. Santos City heading to Kidapawan City; I was excited, of course! I left Marist Aspirancy House after thanking the community animator, Br. Wency Calimpon; by the way, thanks also to Br. Lindley, Br. Larry, Br. Joe and the whole community where I stayed for the whole summer while facilitating the Vocation Workshop. So what’s with Kidapawan City?

Starting from now on, this will be the kind of life I am facing: in constant move, a missionary life: itinerancy. I can still remember when I was asked where do I prefer to go for my first assignment for ministry. Notre Dame of Jolo High School Kasulutan was my first preference while Palawan Mission in Rizal was the second. But I kept myself open to any possibility of being transferred. Indeed, those places were not for me this time. Same situation happened four years go when the Master of Novices asked me where would I go for community exposure. I asked to be assigned here in Kidapawan City. Since my batchmate preferred to go to Jolo, Sulu, the superior gave his wise decision: assign me in Jolo, while the other in Kidapawan; we just swapped. From that experience, I reflected that something good and blessed will happen to me here in Kidapawan, same learning I might learn from being assigned to a place I never dreamed before, that was in Jolo, Sulu. I felt the anxiety and fear of my loveones and friends when they learned that I was in Jolo. But here I am, blogging about that past experience.

Just this morning, I started strolling around the campus. I know nobody here, except for the two Brothers, Ted and Nuel. Unfortunately, they’re not around to introduce the school community to me. They are out of town for important school matters. I visited the President’s office first. The secretary invited me this morning after Mass at the Cathedral. The administrators, teachers and students I met this morning warmly welcomed me and I am happy about it except that it also makes me anxious. Tell you what? Nevermind this time, hahaha!

As of this time, I’m still settling down, “feeling” the whole house, familiarizing the whole campus and knowing the people here. I might be out tomorrow and go the the school farm and see what are the best thing Kidapawan would give me for the year….Wait, that’s not really my purpose… I know, Mt. Apo is so close! I’m here as a Marist Brother in the school, not as a tourist but as an educator following Marcellin. No more escapades this time, hehehe…

I might meet also the Kidapawan company of bloggers like Richard and others from this place… Image of Mt. Apo by Pinoy Mountaineer. Visit the site for more mountains… hehehe…

And by the way, the other kid in town, which I mean… the Diocese of Kidapawan has a new Bishop! It was announced this morning by the parish priest that the present bishop of Diocese of Antique will be the new Bishop of the Diocese of Kidapawan. He is Bishop Romulo de la Cruz, DD. More about him here, where I also got his picture.
