2008 Summer Concert Series and Master Classes

This summer, join WBGO at the Newark Museum for the Jazz in the Garden Summer Concert Series. Now into its fourth decade, the Jazz in the Garden series is deeply rooted in its commitment to presenting all–star lineups of jazz greats to the Newark community. "The series allows me to bring musicians to Newark who may not necessarily perform there and it allows people who don't go to clubs to experience [jazz music] in a comfortable, affordable setting. It also gives people a chance to see The Newark Museum and its beauty. I see it as a win-win for Newark," says Jazz in the Garden producer and WBGO on-air personality, Sheila Anderson, who has been producing and emceeing Jazz in the Garden for the last six years.

New Jersey's largest museum, the Newark Museum offers culturally significant experiences with extensive exhibits, and special presentations in arts and sciences. This year, through the support of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Jazz in the Garden increases its program with a free master class conducted by Latin-jazz great Bobby Sanabria on July 19. "This is an extraordinary opportunity that will give up-and-coming musicians the chance to get real-life direction from a master musician that they might not get in a classroom," says Anderson. The hour-long program, held inside the museum, following the Sonabria's outdoor public performance in the Alice Random Dreyfuss Memorial Garden, gives students an opportunity to meet and talk with the artists. During the session, he will demonstrate aspects of his jazz expertise, share career tips and engage in a Q&A session.
