What a Difference a Year Makes

May 15, 2008, 6:46 pm | J.B. Elliott | Drought

A year ago today, Birmingham Airport had received a mere 9.68 inches of rain and we were showing a deficit of over 13 inches!

By this afternoon, Birmingham had received 1.82 inches from today’s storms bringing our 2008 total to 24.70, a SURPLUS of 1.87. (We can finalize those numbers later this evening when final totals are available.

So, we have about 2-1/2 times more rain this year.

Not everyone is in that well off. Various locations around the state still have a deficiency of several inches.

Since today’s rain was a (big) (huge) (great) event (choose one) we will post a comprehensive list of rain amounts around 8 oclock tonight. All of the totals should be in by then.

JB, my totals on Simmons’ Mt. kept increasing with additional rain. The total finally topped out at 1.81 inches after all the rain moved out.

I guess this means we’re are finally chipping away at last years deficit with this year’s excess….if that’s how it works.

Hey- was looking at the radar and see a pretty solid line of rain/t-storms moving into northwestern MS and seemingly heading southeast. Seems to be heading our way if it holds together. Are we in for a little more rain late tonight?

How does this put in with the drought in long range terms? How far behind are we still for the deficit of the last few years?
