Slate Preparing "The Big Money" Business Site

Most details still under wraps

I haven't seen "Wheel of Fortune" in a long time, but I suspect someone at Slate has been watching closely.  To borrow a phrase from people who shout at spinning things, the online magazine's new business site will be called "The Big Money."

Launch dates remain a bit unclear - "this summer" is as precise as anyone's been - but other things, such as the site's targets, have been well established.  Editor James Ledbetter touched on this issue in an interview with Reuters.

"We're reaching a different audience," explained Ledbetter, "a general interest site for people who have an interest in money and financial affairs and economics ... but not specifically or necessarily who work in the finance industry."

So long as this stays close to the Slate tradition, and not nearer to the MainStreet.com model, it sounds like a solid idea.  There's certainly been no shortage of finance-related stories as of late.

Then again, The Big Money will be entering a pretty crowded market.  A Jossip article states, "Business needs another website like Ryan Seacrest needs another job."

Doug, Thanks for the item.

Doug, Thanks for the item. Acutally, the inspiration for the name is not from "Wheel of Fortune" (although you are not the first person to make that connection). Rather, "The Big Money" is the name of the third novel in John Dos Passos' "USA" trilogy.

Best,

James Ledbetter
