Facebook Prepping For Profile Changes

All signs point to "not much longer now"

Facebook's still not saying exactly when an overhaul of its user profiles will occur - the most recent official statement just includes the word "soon."  But there are some indications that "soon" might almost equal a hold-your-breath length of time.

Yesterday, Facebook held a small press conference to discuss the profile redesign.  Then, although previous announcements about the matter have mostly shown up on the Facebook Developers blog, a product manager put a post on the more user-oriented Facebook Blog.

More evidence: a Facebook outage apparently occurred last night, and although those accustomed to Twitter might shrug off this sort of thing, it's not at all common for the older social network.

Finally, to either dodge media attention or ensure there's less stress on a new system, companies have often made important announcements and changes close to the weekend.  It looks like Facebook is heading in this direction.

Facebook's Mark Slee has promised that his company is "making the profile cleaner and simpler, and more relevant, while still giving you control over your profile."  A video of questionable quality gives more details.  Wait a little while longer, though, and you might be able to take a hands-on tour.

I am fairly new to using social networking site. I was a late adopter because I did not see the value in it initially. However, I am enjoying Facebook so far. If I had input with the facebook people, I would urge them to make it more intuitive. Like so many sites, I had to get familiar with facebook before I could get around the site efficiently. This is not uncommon online and it is a mistake. Before you can get loyal users, you must first get people to hand around long enough to become interested and invested. The current design falls short.

Changes for the better?

Well they have finally got round to making the changes and in my opinion it is for the better. A lot of people I know have gone against it, preferring the old version. However, I really like the new design and how things work, I hope that over time people will get used to the new layout and drop this backlash.

Facebook Changes

I agree with all of the comments about Facebook up to this point and want to add more.  I have always appreciated expanding/collapsing feature of all areas on my profile.  I like to keep my page clean and neat looking and expand/collapse at MY whim.  If friends (or whomever I've given permission to view my page) wanted to view a particular area of my page all they had to do was expand it.  NOW, with the changes & our Mini Feed not collapsible it's creating an unclean view of my page.  It may seem picky but I now have to scroll way down the page to access my other collapsed areas.  Very inefficient and unneeded in my view!!

I would like to see a cleaner & more sleeker page WITHOUT all the junky little ads that get in the way too.  I think Facebook editors are going to lose some of us to other social networks if they propose what they have changed and proposed to change will prove to be cleaner and simpler.  NOT cleaner in my view with the non-collapsing option taken away.  Simpler???  It's NEVER been simple with all the junk visible on a page that you have to sort through to get what and where you want.

Facebook profile changes

I agree. I really liked the ability for me to control the layout - especially when it comes to the mini-feed. I'm sure many of my friends don't care that I just made a comment on the mom's group, or that I became friends with so-and-so. I always used to keep the mini-feed collapsed because the more important areas of my profile should appear first (closer to the top so you don't have to scroll way down to see it). Don't like the idea that it will not be collapsible any more. Makes me skeptical of what other changes I may not like.

Facebook Interface

I am fairly new to using social networking site. I was a late adopter because I did not see the value in it initially. However, I am enjoying Facebook so far. If I had input with the facebook people, I would urge them to make it more intuitive. Like so many sites, I had to get familiar with facebook before I could get around the site efficiently. This is not uncommon online and it is a mistake. Before you can get loyal users, you must first get people to hand around long enough to become interested and invested. The current design falls short.

User control

I don't care very much for Facebook. They don't allow the kind of user control over the layout. They won't allow the open use on the html to would like to use on your page.  What fun is that?

Another Problem

I enjoy face book very much,I also enjoy some of the applications, however they should work to improve the communication between the apps and Facebook so that the user is not stuck in the middle of something because the two get stuck for some reason - this message try again in a day or two stinks.

So with the update maybe they can fix this also.

I love Facebook, but the

I love Facebook, but the interface is appauling.  Most users run at 1024 x 768 or higher.  FB layout is still at 800 x 600 and looks cluttered.

Facebook has needed to

Facebook has needed to update it's user profile pages for a while as they're begining to look a bit dated and uninteresting. I think it looks too much like a database and less like a user-friendly blog.
