Guardian Gives Page, Brin U.K. Media Crown

Yes, you read that right

Larry Page and Sergey Brin are about as powerful as people get in the U.S. tech industry, and it seems they enjoy a similar standing among U.K. media figures.  Google's cofounders have come out on top of the new MediaGuardian 100 list.

This odd-seeming arrangement can be explained by a brief glance at the rules.  "Candidates are judged on three criteria - their cultural, economic and political influence in the UK," according to an official explanation.  Also, "The list . . . takes in all sectors of the media, including broadcasting, publishing, digital media, advertising, marketing and PR."

So Page and Brin wound up sharing first place - an accomplishment that's all the more impressive since it's their first time on the list.  Steve Ballmer appeared for the first time, too, grabbing the number seven spot.  And although the beginning of Steve Ballmer's bio focuses on Microsoft's dealings with Yahoo, it must be pointed out that Jerry Yang's name is nowhere in sight.

To give you an idea of the rest of the field (and to just highlight some favorites), we're pleased to note that car guy Jeremy Clarkson and Radiohead singer Thom Yorke earned spots 58 and 63, respectively, on the MediaGuardian 100 list.

Finally, a sort of nice coincidence is evident insofar as a recent post on the Official Google Blog focused on Radiohead's newest music video.
