When a kid says "look what I can do" and then hops up and down, his parents (and parents' friends) are obligated to smile and applaud. With a similar mindset, we bring you word that Google Suggest is going mainstream.
Work on Google Suggest began about four years ago. It's been part of Google Labs for a while, and has shown up in some random places like Google Maps and YouTube. Somehow, the feature just never made it to Google.com.
Until now, anyway. Google's own Jennifer Liu writes that Google Suggest is getting rolled out this week. As other tools have done for quite some time, it'll recommend full terms and phrases as users type a few letters, and go a small step further by correcting spelling errors.
The most interesting thing about Google Suggest is the way in which it will also list the number of search results that every recommended query should net. This may steer people towards more productive searches and wind up saving them some time.
The new feature is mostly something for the "way to go, pal" pile, though. Opinions might even swerve in a less indulgent direction if its suggestions are seen as cluttering up Google's homepage.
