Lawsuits have long been the main way through which copyright owners have interacted with YouTube. It seems that the Video ID program has achieved a sort of miracle, though, and made some owners like YouTube after all.
The Video ID system sniffs out unauthorized clips and gives copyright owners several options, the first of which is to have them taken down. Alternative number two: promote them for the sake of free publicity. Then there's option number three, which is proving quite popular and looks to be behind the cessation of hostilities.
On the Official Google Blog, David King writes, "[O]ur partners are . . . monetizing 90% of all claims created through Video ID."
He then continues, "This has led directly to a similarly significant increase in monetizable partner inventory, as our Video ID partners are seeing claimed content more than double their number of views, against which we can run ads. This means that if a partner has, say, 10,000 views of its content, leaving up videos claimed by our system will lead to an average additional 10,000 views of that same content."
To be fair, these results are based on a limited sample - there are only about 300 partners in the Video ID program. But that number is liable to grow a lot now that these stats have been made public.

I have seen this tracking being used and so far it is very accurate, with the yta modified in the url tracking for the visitor.
Way to go
This is a good move by YouTube. And it's good for the video owner as well - they'll get free publicity and money to boot!
I like this Idea
This was a long time overdue and it happened and I'm glad because everybody wants to get paid for what they produce I think YouTube is a great place to produce and post Videos although I don't agree with posting videos of beatings and such I think its A GREAT OPERTUNITY FOR FLIM MAKERS TO POST THER WORK do you know for every copyrighted video posted that owner is loosing money every time the video is watched on You Tube just picture kids going hungry because of money loss that is AWFUL and we should be ASHAMED TO ALLOW THAT because every time a movie is in the public it ought to produce money of some sort of payment to the copyright owner I know a lot of people think "THEY GOT PLENTY OF MONEY THEY DON'T NEED NO MORE". Well I have a question what if those same people that make that statement IF THE SHOE WAS ON THE OTHER FOOT PEOPLE WOULD THINK DIFFERNTLY I KNOW THEY WOULD I know Copyright Owners have money but do you know every time you see a re-run of a show on Cable or Satellite royalties are still being made even if that show no longer exist on TV my final statement is this I know people think that the Video ID System is AWFUL but if it wasn’t here in a few years there would NO TV LEFT BECAUSE COPYRIGHT OWNER WOULDN'T WANT TO PRODCE ANYTHING ONLY TO GIVE MILLIONS OF COPIES OF THAT SHOW YEARS LATER TO YOUTUBE THINK ABOUT THAT
