Lots more casting news out of Star Trek 11 which seems like it must have the most massive Star Trek movie ever as this storyline is going to pull in just about every Federation character out there. The big names and roles first since they’re most interesting. Captain Pike, who is more of a backstory character, has been confirmed as Bruce Greenwood (John from Cincinnati and the upcoming National Treasure 2). Bruce has promised us that his character won’t just end up in a box with blinking lights like last time around (MTV Movies). Next up you’ve got Spock’s mother, Amanda Grayson, who will be played by Winona Ryder. I’m not too sure how I feel about that one, but I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt here. Zachary Quinto, cast as Spock, is really too close in age (Ryder is 36 and Quinto is 30), so this must be a flashback character unless they age her a lot.
Jumping over to the more secondary casts there have been several more additions to the lineup. Speculation/rumors point towards Rachel Nicols (Alias and P2) to come in as Janice Rand, according to AICN, the lead female character from season 1 of Star Trek. Jennifer Morrison (House) will be playing Dr. Carol Marcus, the mother of Captain Kirk. Again another young female for the mother of a grown character. One more “too young” actor will be Chris Hemsworth, who will be Captain Kirk’s father, who died mysteriously 25 years before the younger Kirk too over the Enterprise.
So all of these actors just seem way too young so they must be doing flashbacks. But don’t forget about about Leonard Nimoy who is coming back to play Spock again as well. Does that mean the story will all be a flashback from his time? If so that gives us 3 different time planes in the movie. Nimoy’s Spock, Quinto’s Spock, and lastly Ryder’s Spock’s mother. Wow, that’s going to be crazy busy jumping all over the place.

While this movie may prove interesting, I am not happy with this trend of exploring the past. How about moving forward with some new material, or are they not up to the challenge of creating interesting new storylines?
