節能絕不代表用替代能源或換省電燈泡就可以了,能源的使用不只來自開車或用電,我們平常大量消費的物品,從製造、包裝、運送、販賣、使用、以及之後成為垃圾的處理,都需要使用能源,因此若不消費的層面檢討能源問題,再多的省電燈泡、再多的油電混和車,都無濟於事。
經濟體都不可能一直維持成長,在經濟上,總體的經濟成長不是重點,維持平穩和公平的財富分配最要緊,這才有可能永續發展,如果一直追求經濟成長,永續發展不過是夢囈。(但,哪一個政府敢大膽說經濟成長不是重點?一定會被滿腦子只有賺更多錢的企業主、不明就裡的民眾罵到臭頭,我覺得這是民主最大的弔詭,那就是多數人要的東西不見得是對的,然而民主的機制—選舉,卻奠基在多數人想要什麼之上)。
用增加製造、增加消費來創造經濟成長的換句話說,就是資源和能源的無止盡取用。想像一下,這些大量工業製造品所耗用的能源和原料,加上隨之而來的巨量垃圾,根本無法用環保筷、環保包、省電燈泡、油電混和車、再生能源等的使用來抵銷。當然,這些都還是該做,但最重要、最基本的還是人們減少製造、減少消費!
氣候環境變遷和資本主義的運作邏輯脫不了關係,鼓勵消費的思維是氣候環境變遷的元凶,而企業的行銷廣告是幫兇。天天接受這些廣告資訊轟炸的消費著,如果真的關心自己、關心後代子子孫孫、關心地球上其他物種,頭腦得保持清醒,別被廣告牽著鼻子走,盡量少消費,當買任何一樣東西時,想想看,這會不會很快就成為無用的垃圾?會不會成為有毒的垃圾遺害他人?會不會間接違背了人道(你買的東西可能是不得休息和睡眠的童工做的)?

If you were to ask how much material is wasted each year, most people would admit that a certain percentage is wasted, but not a great deal. Actually, we are more than ten times better at wasting resources than at using them. A study for the US National Academy of Engineering found that about 93 per cent of the materials we buy and ‘consume’ never end up in saleable products at all. Moreover, 80 per cent of products are discarded after a single use, and many of the rest are not as durable as they should be, Business reformer Paul Hawken estimates that 99 per cent of the original materials used in the production of, or contained within, the goods made in the US become waste within 6 weeks of sale. 93% 廢能; 80% 產品變相是即棄型的; 99% 的產品和其有連帶關係的物品在消費的 6 週內被丢棄。
