Last week, iPhone users noticed that AT&T WiFi hotspots in some Starbucks locations allowed free access after asking for their 10-digit cell number. Then on Monday this week, however, users reported the free access had been shut off. Today, that changed again, as AT&T's website officially states that all iPhone rate plans now include "access to AT&T's more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots" across the US.
In addition to rolling out hotspots at Starbucks this summer, AT&T maintains hotspots in Barnes & Noble bookstores as well as a number of hotels, airports, and other retail establishments. AT&T has a handy hotspot locator online to help you track down access in your area. An AT&T spokesperson declined to comment, though, so there's no official word yet from AT&T if the company has already flipped the iPhone access switch back to "On."
