NU chairman criticizes US

Jakarta - Indonesia`s biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) chairman Hasyim Muzadi who is currently visiting the United States criticizes the country`s foreign policy.

An NU press release said here on Saturday that Hasyim made the criticism in a seminar on "Empowering the Indonesian Moderates to Combat Terrorism and Extremism" at John Hopkins University in Washington DC on Friday.

On the occasion, the NU chairman said the United States was frequently unfair in its response to the issues in various part of the world.

Hasyim, who is concurrently the president of World Conference on Religious for Peace (WCRP), pointed out that the United States has so far been trying to be understood but failed to understand other parties.

"I hope the world can listen to the US but the county as well should also listen to the world," the press release quoted Hasyim as saying.

He noted that if the US wanted to be fair, the world problem such as the Israeli-Palestinian issue would have been overcome.

Hasyim also cricized the US for its wrong approach in dealing with extremism in the world.(*)
