Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Police have identified five suspects in the Monas Square at Jakarta incident in which members of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) and other mass organizations attacked activists of the National Alliance for Freedom of Religion and Faith (AKKBB) on Sunday.

"There are five people we have been able to categorize as suspects," Commissioner General Bambang Hendarso Dahuri, head of the National Police Headquarters` Criminal Investigation Department, said here on Monday.

The police were now on the lookout for the five suspects, he said while declining to give more details on them , including their names.

He said the police would always take stern action against those violating the law on acts of violence. "The process of law enforcement will be implemented strictly," Dahuri said.

The police would also conduct an investigation to identify the mastermind of the violence, Dahuri said.

Meanwhile, a number of people from various elements in society including legislators, political observers, human rights activists, and members of GP Anshor and Baitul Muslimin Indonesia (BMI) on Monday came to National Police Headquarters to lodge a complaint about the Monas Square violence.

They urged the police to take firm measures against organizations committing acts of violence to achieve their aims such as FPI.

FPI members attacked activists at the Monas (National Monument) Square in Central Jakarta on Sunday afternoon, leaving 70 people injured , seven of whom had to undergo intensive treatment at Jakarta hospitals.

FPI and other mass organizations staged a rally against the fuel price hike in front of the State Palace while AKKBB was marching towards the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Circle to commemorate the Pancasila`s anniversary. However, they met at Monas and the violent incident occurred.

"We had warned the alliance about a possible clash with Islamic groups who would be staging a protest against the fuel price increases at the same time, but they insisted on going anyway," Adjunct Senior Commissioner Suharna of the Jakarta Police told the Jakarta Post on Sunday following the incident.

House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono said here Monday the House condemned the violence committed by FPI members.
