Tangerang, (ANTARA News) - Terminal III of Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, Banten, is scheduled for operation on December 1, 2008 in order to increase the accommodating capacity of the international airport, a spokesman said.

"The present capacity of Soekarno-Hatta airport is already overburdened so that another terminal is needed to accommodate the increasing number of passengers," a spokesman of airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II), Trisno Heryadi, said here on Wednesday.

He said it was planned that Terminal III would have five sub-terminals but AP II gave priority to the development of one sub-terminal which was expected to be completed in December 2008.

Trisno said the four other sub-terminals would be built one by one in the following years.

Terminal III is expected to be used for domestic flights.

He said Soekarno-Hatta airport terminals had a capacity of 18 million passengers per year, while the number of passengers flowing in and out of the terminals in 2007 stood at 31 million.

"Therefore, the additional Terminal III with its capacity of four million passengers per sub-terminal per year is needed," he added.

Up to June 2008, the physical development of Terminal III had reached 29 percent.
