Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Crescent and Star Party (PBB) deputy chairman Hamdan Zoelva said the Islam Defenders` Front (FPI) could not be dissolved without legal process.

"FPI cannot be dissolved just like that without legal process," Zoelva said here on Wednesday.

According to him, the attack by FPI members against activists of the National Alliance for Freedom of Religion and Faith (AKKBB) was a spontaneous reaction to the provocation of AKKBB.

"The FPI cannot be blamed for its members` spontaneous actions if it`s proven that there were provocative words and actions," he said.

The FPI actions related to blasphemy of one`s religion, he said.

"Anybody can become angry spontaneously if his or her religion is denigrated," he said referring to AKKBB`s actions supporting Ahmadiyah, which is considered as a deviant sect by Muslims.

He said organizations that needed to be dissolved were those which were not registered and could be used for provocative activity any time.

"It`s more urgent to dissolve mass organizations and NGOs which receive foreign aid not through governmental channels, because they could threaten our country and nation," he said.

Meanwhile, Muslim Lawyer Team (TPM) Coordinator Mahendradatta said last Monday the violent attacks by FPI members against AKKBB at the National Monument (Monas) last Sunday was due to provocation by AKKBB orators.

Police arrested 58 FPI members early Wednesday in connection with Sunday`s Monas Square incident.

FPI members attacked activists at the Monas (National Monument) Square in Central Jakarta on Sunday afternoon, leaving 70 people injured , seven of whom had to undergo intensive treatment at Jakarta hospitals.

FPI and other mass organizations staged a rally against the fuel price hike in front of the State Palace while AKKBB was marching towards the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Circle to commemorate the Pancasila`s anniversary. Somehow, they met at Monas and the violent incident occurred.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked law-enforcement agencies to take stern action against the people who committed acts of violence.
