Ansor and FPI Hold Peace Meeting

Samarinda: The Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and the Ansor Youth Movement (GP Ansor) in East Kalimantan held a peace meeting. Syarifudin, head of GP Ansor for East Kalimantan, said the meeting is to discuss how to keep the FPI conflict in Java from spreading to their region. “The meeting is to prevent misunderstanding,” he said yesterday. “We will continue having this kind of meeting.”

The meeting held at the Al-Ma’ruf mosque , Samarinda, attended by head of FPI for East Kalimantan, Habib Muhammad Assegaf, followers from both groups, and also the Ansor paramilitary from Nahdlatul Ulama.

“We ask the entire community to maintain a non-violent culture,” said Syarifudin. Regarding the call to close down the FPI, Habib Muhamamad Assegaf disagrees. “This is an effort to destroy Islam,” he said.

In Jakarta, former President Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus Dur suggested that the government dissolve FPI. Arresting Rizieq Shihab is not enough. “If the government will not dissolve them, we will,” he said in a press conference yesterday.

Home Affairs Minister, Mardiyanto, said that this is possible as long as the organization is proven that it puts the public in a dangerous situation, receiving international aid and assisting the international movement illegally.

Head of FPI for Bandung, Ayub Solihin, said FPI Bandung does not agree to disband. “It will happen,” he said yesterday in Bandung.
