Medan, North Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Former chairman of the People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Amien Rais said Saturday he was prepared and waiting to be questioned by police over the June 1 incident at the National Monument (Monas) square.

"Not only am I prepared, I am also waiting for the questioning," he said.

On June 1, Islamic Defenders` Front (FPI) members attacked National Alliance for Freedom of Faith and Religion (AKKBB) activists at the Monas Square, leaving 70 people injured.

The AKKBB activists were holding a rally at the square to commemorate the 63rd year of the state ideology Pancasila when they were attacked by stick-wielding FPI members.

The FPI and other mass organizations came to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Headquarters recently to report 289 people whom they accused of being masterminds of the Monas incident.

The 289 people included Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), Adnan Buyung Nasution, Azyumardi Azra, Sinta Nuriyah (Gus Dur`s wife) and Amien Rais.

Amien said he learnt he was among the 289 people believed to be responsible for the incident.

The former chairman of the Muhammadiyah Islamic organization expressed hope police would soon conduct the questioning to uphold the law over the June 1 incident.

As a law-abiding citizen, Amien said, he accepted the questioning in order to set an example to the entire nation not to take the law into their own hands.

In a constitutional and democratic country, differences of views were justified so long as there must be ethics and rules of the game, he added.

"We may have differences of views and cry but must not resort to violence," he said.
