Jakarta: Vice President Jusuf Kalla asked the Public Works Department to recycle waste as the basic water supply has decreased.

“In the near future, water will be in short supply,” he said in a meeting for national water utilities throughout Indonesia today (13/6).

Kalla explained that waste can be recycled several times. For example, Japan recycles their water eight times, and China, five times. “Water should be recycled so it can be used five or more times.”

He suggested that the Public Works Department work together with partners to recycle the waste. However, regional utilities should be improved first. “So, there will not be a problem,“ he said.

He also suggested central and regional governments have one vision regarding clean water supply. It should be commercialized as a primary need.

“Technology for recycling waste water should be developed as we have to supply for 200 million people,” he said.

Kalla said regional potable water utilities can increase the tariff in order to subsidize the poor for clean water access.

More tariff can reduce the water consumption. “If the rates are too little, it will not help regional potable utilities to be developed,” he said.
