Jakarta: Buildings throughout Jakarta will have to apply the concept of a ‘green building’ by 2009.

“This to control the energy usage in a building,” said head of City Planning and Control for Jakarta, Hari Sasongko to reporters yesterday. He also said that the concept will help reduce gas emissions and the effect from greenhouses.

As an example, the building should use air conditioning effectively by having sufficient air ventilation.

The light source should be considered when seeing to save electricity. Walls should be painted in a light color to ease air absorption. “The heat in the building can also be arranged by having a garden on the roof of the building,” said Hari.

The concept will also arrange the land water usage and waste management, so the building will have minimal impact to the environment.

The concept will be promoted this year. The buildings applying the concept will have tax reduction while for the building not applying the concept will have more taxes.

The building operators including Grand Indonesia, welcomed this idea. “Many actually have applied this concept,” said Grand Indonesia's spokesperson, Koentjoro to Tempo.
