Jakarta, (ANTARA News) - The Attorney General`s Office (AGO) is to question some of its senior staff following the disclosure of telephone contacts between Artalyta Suryani, a key defendant in the alleged bribing of a public prosecutor investigating a BLBI (Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance) case, and the ranking AGO officials.

Records made by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigators of the telephone contacts were played in a session of the court trying Suryani.

Attorney General Hendarman Supandji gave hints about the initiative to conduct an internal investigation in statements to the press in Magelang and Semarang, Central Java, on Saturday.

He said in Magelang he had instructed the Junior Attorney General for Supervision to seek a clarification on a telephone conversation between Suryani and Kemas Yahya Rahman, the then Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes, which happened after the AGO decided to stop its inquiry into a BLBI case involving business tycoon Syamsul Nursalim.

"This morning I ordered the Junior Attorney General for Supervision to seek a clarification on the recorded conversation," Supandji said after attending a social function in Magelang.

The record of Suryani`s telephone talk with Yahya was played at a session of the Special Corruption Court in Jakarta on Wednesday (June 11). The court was trying Suryani on the charge of having given a US$660,000 bribe to Public Prosecutor Urip Tri Gunawan who was then head of an AGO team handling BLBI cases.

The conversation was intercepted and recorded by KPK investigators on March 1,2008, one day after Yahya announced the discontinuation of the investigation into Nursalim`s BLBI case.

Following Urip Tri Gunawaan`s arrest for receiving Suryani`s bribe, Yahya was removed from his position but not prosecuted.

In Semarang on the same day, Supandji said he had also ordered the Junior Attorney General for Supervision to question Junior Attorney General for Civil and State Administration Cases Untung Udji Santoso and Junion Attorney General for Intelligence Wisnu Subroto in connection with certain facts bared in Suryani`s court trials.

"I have ordered the Junior Attorney General for Supervision to interrogate Untung Udji Santoso and Wisnu Subroto. It will be done on Monday (June 16)," he said.

Supandji said he had to wait for the completion of the court trials of businesswoman Artalita Suryani and Public Prosector Urip Tri Gunawan to know whether more AGO staffers were implicated in the bribery case. But if other public prosecutors were indeed involved, it was up to the junior attorney general for supervision to determine the extent of their guilt.

When he was in Magelang, Supandji said after the court trials of Suryani and Gunawan had been completed "we can make a list of all the AGO officials mentioned or possibly involved in the case."

He said when it was proven in court Suryani`s bribe to Gunawan was linked to Syamsul Nursalim`s BLBI debt, the AGO would obviously reopen its investigation into the case.
