Jakarta, (ANTARA News) - The State Intelligence Agency (BIN) should not make disturbing public statements but instead return to its main task as strategic data and information supplier to the media and public, a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party- Struggle (PDI-P) faction in the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission-I, Andreas Pareira, said here on Saturday.

He said BIN should not have made baseless statements and disturbing accusations through the media.

"The reckless, disproportional statements or accusations recently made by BIN chief Syamsir Siregar will make our already `sick` nation even worse because of improper management," Pareira said.

The BIN chief recently made statements to the media in which he used the swear-word "sontoloyo" in referring to certain cabinet ministers and alleged cabinet members were not united on the domestic fuel oil price issue.

"If I were the president, I would have dismissed these `sontoloyo` ministers," Warta Kota daily quoted Siregar as saying recently.

Pareira said Siregar`s statements indicated BIN had done little to shed its "Malay (authoritarian but blunderous) political intelligence tactics" for which it was known during the New Order era.

"BIN`s job is to provide the security authorities with information and work in coordination with them to prevent public order and security disturbances," Pareira said.

"I think our people are now more critical and will no longer be fooled by such reckless statements," Pareira said.

Pareira also said BIN had failed to provide the police with information and to coordinate with the latter to prevent anarchism, In fact, BIN had probably played a role in the anarchism and tried to find a scapegoat, or BIN wanted to divert public attention from the fuel price hike problem and disturb the concentration of House members who were currently preparing an inquiry on the government`s fuel oil pricing policy, he said.
