Los Angeles (ANTARA News/dpa) - The light sabre used by Luke Skywalker in the movies Star Wars and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back has sold for 240,000 dollars at a Hollywood auction.

The item topped the bidding at a Profiles in History auction held Thursday, according to a press release Friday. In total bidders paid around 3.5 million dollars for more than 500 items of Hollywood memorabilia.

The second most expensive item in the auction was a droid helmet from Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi which sold for 120,000 dollars.

Other major items included an original handwritten manuscript of the James Bond film You Only Live Twice, and a full-sized animatronic primate from the movie Mighty Joe Young, both of which sold for 96,000 dollars each.

A Wolverine black leather battle-suit from X-Men sold for 90,000 dollars and a custom-built version of a 1937 Mercedes German staff car from Raiders of the Lost Ark went for 76,000 dollars.

The costume worn by Marlon Brando when he played Jor-El in Superman: The Movie went for 72,000 dollars.

Light sabres were the weapon of choice for Jedi knights of Star Wars fame. They were constructed for the movies by adapting an advanced camera flash attachment to a handle that was made from rubber windscreen wipers from a British WW II tank, according to the Star Wars website.
