The Rebuilding Of MEGADETH - In DAVE MUSTAINE's Words - July 5, 2008
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has posted the following message in the "Forums" section of the band's official web site:

"So, we go out on tour with Shawn [Drover, drummer] and Glen [Drover, now-former MEGADETH guitarist] and everything is documented, and we have James MacDonough [bassist] with us at the time too. Shawn ends up in the hospital the first night from vertigo and confesses that he has only played only two concerts before that night.

"Thus starts the tremendous work of rebuilding the band and earning back our credibility. James MacDonough was in the band long enough to participate in the widely acclaimed 'That One Night' live DVD from one of my favorite spots in the world; Buenos Aires, Argentina. This DVD shows what MEGADETH is in a nutshell. You can almost fast-forward to 'Symphony Of Destruction' and that is all that separates the audiences from night to night. James, and the Drovers and I, did not connect with MacDonough and he currently lives in north of the USA on the West Coast.

"Once James and MEGS parted ways, I was really excited about James Lomenzo, or 'JLo,' as he likes to be called. And you know I gave him shit about his nickname. I felt euphoric when I heard his bass line for 'Washington Is Next!' Even though I was back on top with quite possibly the best bassist yet, and a plain old pal, this was also the beginning of almost one and a half years of hell I mentioned.

"When James came in, we had different management and a different production/enginerring team as compared to things at the end. We started with Jeff Balding, a producer and engineer that I hold very, very high in my esteem and finished with Andy Sneap (which was a great thing to have had happen). And we also had a different company and finished with Mark Adelman from Azoff Music.

"Sounds exciting, right? Well, we had a lot of rats below the poop deck.

"After finishing the world tour for 'The System Has Failed', we had to deal with the sadness of having to cancel our Mexican dates, because the last time we played in Mexico City, we played with MÖTLEY CRÜE, and they got booed off stage and pelted with burning seat cushions while the audience cheered MEGADETH to come back out, and this was one of the most famous MEGADETH shows ever. We were really looking forward to coming back to Mexico City and the tour manager at the time did not have enough time scheduled for us to get to Mexico from Oregon in time.

"We soon after parted ways with this 'tour manager.'

"So, we all went our separate ways, and I still had music left over from when I went in to do my double studio record as a soloist. Remember I mentioned that the first record of this supposed double-studio record was what made up 'The System Has Failed' and I had the second half of this record already written. So when we started the pre-production, we were way farther along than we should have been, but there were numerous problems that interrupted the making of the record, doing concerts, having bizarre interruptions, and so on. I also made a promise to my family that I would be home for two months last summer when the kids got out of school. I did this because the record was supposed to be done by then, but numerous inconveniences and interruptions like I forementioned ended up moving our release date back several months and in order to keep my word and my integrity, I had to sit home for the two months I mentioned which were the first two months of the campaign: IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN WORSE TIMING."

Yes sports fans, it is time to decide: whose publicist is better at getting his boss's name splattered all over the Internet: Gene Simmons's or Dave Mustaine's. Several factors are to be considered, all of which make it clear why, even though they are in there pitching, people like Sebastian Bach *NHRN are not considered. Further, Devin Townsend isn't considered because he can't afford a publicist, and posts his stuff himself (including his fake fan postings). Ditto for that retard in The Haunted.

1) Frequency of postings. Both hugely in the running. Nobody's weekly lunch menu has been posted on Blabbermouth yet, but just you wait!

2) Wackiness of postings. Gene takes a hit here if a posting mentions scabs playing in Kiss while dressed as Ace and Peter, or wacky Kiss merch, or husband and wife plastic surgery. Mustaine takes a hit if a posting contains anything suggesting that Mustaine is pro-Christianity, or has been in therapy, or has bonded with a horse like people on TV (yes, he said that), or that Marty Friedman was wearing a kimono, or if someone on the Megadeth payroll has been ordered to publicly humiliate himself, such as by saying butt kiss things about Mustaine, or by proclaiming himself as "The original J-Lo."

3) Postings by affiliated figures. One day, we had a Mustaine posting followed immediately by a Marty Friedman posting! Gene, you have something to live up to here. However, if a posting by an affiliated figure causes Mustaine to take a hit as described in 2) above, he doesn't gain anything back here.

4) Postings about actual music. Mustaine gains further points, as while every Megadeth record for 10 years has been exactly the same thing as its predecessor, Kiss doesn't record anymore.

5) Postings about true rock and roll merchandise (not coffee shops). Action figure postings are a huge boost. Gene clearly comes out in front here, as while there actually is a Dave Mustaine action figure, it doesn't have a battle axe or much else that is cool abut it.

OK judges, who wins?

I went back to read who posted to see if it was planet hell or nothing to prove and lo and behold it's the same name I remember from his (or her) comments concerning Malmsteen firing all his singers. Now we need to figure out who has the most incoherent ramblings. Dave you're miles ahead, but don't coun't Gene out - after all, greed never brings satisfaction, so expect Gene to go off the deep end any day now.

I guess a lot of you missed the fact that this was posted in the Megadeth forums. Its not a press release or anything, just a continuing story of Mustaine's journey of rebuilding his band. He's writing the story in his own words to dispell rumors, etc. Blabbermouth reposts forum entries, which aren't meant to be "news." Just the band member writing to their fans.

Megadeth is still a great band, just see them live, you'll see.

I have not bought anything for the so-called big four in along time.

Metallica- last thing was Live Shit - Binge and Purge.
To the bands credit " LOAD " was something that just went over my head, I am still young 41, maybe someday I can " get it ".

Anthrax - Last thing I bought was Spreading the Disease only because it has two Neil Turbin pen nedtracks. I was expecting " Gung-Ho" to appear on the "Armed and Dangerous" EP.

The last thing from Slayer was Live "Decade of Agreesion".

Megadeth the last thing I bought was " Countdown to Extinction" I sold my Original Capitol Cassette and got the CD reissuse went it came out on Gold disc.

Bands can not release albums such as "Risk" and "Load" or outright trend-hop and expect to keep the original fanbase intact.

Slayer and Metallica got that "death to false metal" thing started in 1982/ 1983 along with Kick Ass Monthly's Bob Muldowney, who must of got the idea from ManowaR. Those bands taught me to eliminate (poseurs) and discrimate (false metal), untill there bands became the prime target of what to avoid.

I know what bands have to do to improve the fan base to 3000 to 30,000 to 3 million to 3 billion fans. Just becasue I understand that fact does not mean, I have to support music I do not appreciate or listen to.

Dont get me wrong if a band sellout of what I listen to that is cool, because there are always tons of bands buying in to the CORPORATE ROCK STILL SUCK cause.

My only problem with all this is how can Megadeth be called a band anymore? With band members changing faster than most of us change our socks, how can anyone talk about a band with credibility and pedigree? They used be one of these bands back when Marty and the other Dave were there. I love Dave (though I think he is a megalomaniac) and I love Megadeth music for what it is...Dave's solo stuff. How else can it be? He fires guys after they've been in the band for 5 minutes.

Way to diss your family Dave. You'd think with this born-again Christian thing going for him, he'd at least pretend to have some love for his family. Instead he goes on an international forum and says how much it sucked to have to sit at home with his family for 2 months. Grow up!

I like any news on Megadeth because I think Mustaine is funny.

What is funnier is how some people must have had their mothers/girlfriends/daughters slept with by Mustaine ... because there is some SERIOUS venom for a guy that most people have probably never met. So he is known to whine a bit (I would too if I was just a millionaire and not a zillionaire by staying in Metallica) ... big deal.

Plus, a lot of people seem to think they know what has gone on inside the band with the frequent member changes ... what, were you there? Maybe all of the previous members WERE pricks or something, you don't know. Who cares who is in the band, as long as the tunes are good ... and they have a decent, if not stellar, track record in my opinion. Just because other band leaders don't get rid of their members all of the time doesn't mean the band isn't a singular vision of one (maybe two) people.

Give the guy a break. I like ANY news/explanations from my favorite bands ... sorry this post had no deeper meaning for you.
