Elaine Franklin: Rogue of the week / No apology

For a big-league political consultant, this week’s Rogue , Elaine Franklin , made a rookie mistake in the current election cycle.

Well since the news has come out that an advisor (Elaine Franklin) to Phyllis Thiemann was spreading rumors about Matt Lindland the Willamette Week has decided to name her (Elaine Franklin) "Rogue of the Week."

You know what would really be kinda funny if it were not so serious, is that Franklin sent a demeaning email to KXL news last week after her client "Phyllis Thiemann" was asked about the "felony" rumor. She said in that email to KXL that she "only deals in facts." And then attached the 18 year old police report.

When she heard that WWeek was chasing down this story her response? Well it was to fire back at the Lindland campaign, deny the rumor (again) and try to peddle the 18 year old report (again.). And STILL no apology.

“Because Lindland has threatened to sue me and on the advice of my lawyer I will have no further comment on this issue.”

You know the person who has been straight up in this entire affair has been Lindland. He has been honest from the get go about his offense from back when he was a teenager. You'd think that Franklin, if she had any ounce of decency, could have called Lindland and worked something out. Expect him to keep his word. Nope.... nothing.

And from the Phyllis Thiemann campaign? Did Thiemann send an apology to Lindland? Did she rebuke her campaign consultant for spreading lies? Read for yourself:

Dear Matt,

I too filed to run for State Representative in House District 52 because I care deeply about the challenges facing Oregon and especially those facing the residents of our District. That is why I have been tirelessly working with the good people of this district for over 8 years as a volunteer in many different capacities.

I am writing this letter to you in response to your threat of a lawsuit within 48 hours if not having a satisfactory resolution of your demands.

I would like to make it very clear that I am not aware of what Elaine Franklin may or may not have told others.

I certainly do not believe you have committed a felony.

Although I have a copy of your prior conviction, I have never intended to use it in my campaign and still do not.

I would be happy to post a copy of this letter on my website. Is this what you would like me to do?

I wish you the best in your campaign and hopefully, whichever one of us wins in the Primary, the other will be available to assist in winning the seat for the Republicans in the General election.

Sincerely,
Phyllis Thiemann

I mean are you kidding me? I mean how many ironies are in that letter? The first thing that jumps out at me is that Thiemann is trying to set herself up as a "victim" here when it is clear to everyone in the world that she is not even close to being the aggrieved party here.

What other ironies do you folks see here? Mistakes? I mean I could go on and on as to how I would respond. But how bout you?

Yeesh...

If she really is "not aware of what Elaine Franklin may or may not have told others," then where did she get the copy of Lindland's prior conviction? What was discussed when that copy was delivered? Why even bring it up if she "never intended to use it in my campaign and still do not," unless she wanted it to sit out there as a tacit threat?

She says she never intended to use the record of his misdemeanor?

How then does she explain her consultant, Elaine Franklin, emailing it all over town, and the incumbent, Patti Smith, doing the same?

So now we have Phyllis Thiemann joining her consultant in the liars circle.

Are you kidding me? Oh my God what is up with these people!

What is wrong with the Thiemann campaign just coming out and saying "I'm sorry?"

And then denouncing the actions of Franklin?

What is so hard about that? I mean why can't these people just act like f'ing human beings?

Who wrote that response by Thiemann? Some lawyer? Franklin? Another consultant?

I mean why couldn't she just have issued a heart felt human response?

Franklin's response I can kinda-sorta understand. She made a big mistake that could probably get her in some serious trouble.

But Thiemann's response is truly disappointing. What does she have to lose by saying she is sorry about the actions of of "rogue" political operative?

I have always like Patti Smith and I certainly hope that she can speak some common sense to Phyllis Thiemann in this case.

Hmmmm....

Reading the Thiemann letter....apology? Nope. She said precisely nothing in the letter. It's hard to see the point of even writing it.

"I don't know what Elaine did or didn't say?????" What the heck is that?

Is her name Sargent Schultz? Is it some lame attempt to distance herself from what Elaine did?

She clearly did not apologize. And if Elaine Franklin is still her consultant, then it is clear that she condones what Elaine did.

She could have offered up a contingent apology: "If it turns out Elaine did this, I condemn it."

Not even that.

Looks like they have circled the wagons. But from here, it looks more like a circular firing squad.

These people are all goofballs... Lindland included! That's just what we need in the Legislature is a legislator who goes around threatening to sue people who are mean to him. (Well, I hope he's bipartisan enough to work with Democrats, because his tort attorney is certainly going to be one.)

As I look at Thiemann and Franklin I have to conclude that it's true. The worst thing to ever happen to politics was the invention of the laundry machine, electric dryer and dishwasher.

Those three inventions have given women too much free time to spend in politics.

This goes way beyond "being mean to him."

If Elaine Franklin did this, and it sure appears as if she did, then a lawsuit is absolutely appopriate.

Man -- you guys are sure entertaining. All you need now is candidate with a fake Ph.D to run again Galizio, oh, wait -- never mind.

There are no victims in politics, only losers. If Lindland gets the nod in the primary, then any prior convictions will inevitably come out (Freedom of Information requests by a paid for journalist by the VanOrman campaign) and he will get stomped by VanOrman.

If it is not a felony and it is not so bad, then why is Lindland threatening a lawsuit in such a short time frame? Something stinks and it reeks.

Best thing Lindland can do now is come clean with any prior convictions and go on an all out offensive against Thiemann and VanOrman.

BTW, why are you so deadset on backing Lindland, Coyote? Is it that you support every candidate who does business with you just like Chisholm?

Young voter:

Perhaps you haven't been paying attention, but there is no felony. You can't hide felonies. You can't even hide misdemeanors. Matt Lindland's record is already out in the open for everyone to see. It was discussed at length on this blog. A 19 year old class c misdemeanor. When he was 19.

There's nothing suspicious about threatening a lawsuit in a "short time frame." How long does it take to apologize?

Matt Lindland wanted to put a stop to this nonsense in no uncertain terms, and he did so.

YOV,
Now your being just silly. Of course if there is anything bad it will come out.

Oh wait... IT ALREADY HAS. Hah.

A month ago Lindland shared the whole story right here on this blog and even at that the other side decided they would continue to try to press on with the rumor.

Unfortunately for them they are way behind the times and don't believe in reading blogs. And didn't realize that many other people were up on the story.

And what ended up happening?

Well Matt got a major news story on Monday that also brought out his misdemeanor from 19 years ago. And the media in that story laughed it off.

Probably because Lindland did not hide anything and that the charge is really pretty silly once you actually read it.

"You can't hide felonies. You can't even hide misdemeanors."

This is not technically accurate. A former Oregon State Senator was convicted of drunk driving and wrecking a car when he was 15. After he was elected the records all disappeared. I'm sure it was because he was a minor when the offense took place, but the timing was pretty amazing. For some reason, no one ever used it against him.

Phyllis is making a big error in judgment. The felony rumor Elaine Franklin was spreading was everywhere. There is no way Phyllis didn't know about it. No way!

I think she is sticking by or defending Franklin, because she was complicit If she is just being loyal, it is misplaced loyalty. Elaine Franklin does not deserve loyalty.

Patti Smith deserves the embarrassment this affair is bringing her and Thiemann and Franklin deserve the loss they are about to be handed.

As for Lindland, this whole sorted affair is good practice for him. Democrat consultants in the general will be a lot nastier than even Elaine Franklin can be.

My nod to the Willamette Week for calling a spade a spade.
