Great meals you had this week! I love the graham crackers with frosting on Wednesday! I haven't had that in years! My mom use to always make that as a snack for us. Yum! :)
Totally unrelated, but just curious about why you want to have such a large savings fund but not clear your loan? Is it because the interest rate is really low? :)
Looks like you did great this week!
I really like your blog! I read pages of it in one sitting.
Good work. I just hope that I have the same self-control as you when it comes time for me to earn money.
I have the same question as Fabulously Broke. Why have you not cleared your loan when you could do so?
I'm just asking because I'm at the beginning of my university career and have already taken some student loans to pay for it. I will likely take some more before I finish my undergrad, probably in 2011. I'm estimating that by that time I won't have more than $25,000 CDN as student loans, perhaps less.
Whenever the subject comes up, I think that I'm going to pay it off completely when I graduate. Cover what I can with what's in my savings account (at my local bank), and then get my parents to pay the rest. (I would try to pay them back in the future, I know they aren't going to charge me interest).
But I've seen that most people on these budgeting blogs are not doing that, paying off their loans, even though they could fully afford to do that.
That's why I'm asking. Is it wiser to not pay them off right away? Does it depend on the interest rate?
Also, do you have any advice for getting summer jobs/internships? I have applied to 22 jobs so far and have gotten no response. My summer begins in a month from now.
Thank you for your time, you don't have to answer everything : )
Also, I forgot to mention, I don't know if this is how it works with other student loans as well, but mine does not start charging interest until I graduate. I am planning to borrow about $5,000 (max $7,000) each year.
I always thought I would pay it off right away to give me peace of mind and not have to worry/stress about it...
Fabulously broke and Anonymous...I've thought about paying down my loan, but the interest is locked in at 2.625%. I can earn more interest putting that money in savings than by paying it off. Plus, I'm still able to claim the interest from the student loan on my taxes, although only a percentage of it because of how much I make.
My Subsidized Stafford loans didn't accrue interest until I graduated, but my Unsubsidized ones did. I started making payments about 6 months after I graduated. I've been paying since Nov 2004, and the loan is consolidated for 30 years.
Anonymous...I'm not sure what suggestions to give you on the internships. I'd keep looking for something. I got an internship one summer at a smaller company that probably didn't get many applicants.
I love reading your menus...you must be incredibly thin! I think I'll take this challenge this coming week!
Ohhh that totally makes sense.
Anon - I have canadian debt too, and the interest rate I'm paying with le government is 8.75%freaking percent!!!!!!
But my savings is only 4%, hence why *I* clear my loan...
That's a great strategy beachgirl :)
