Karl Rove announced today that he would be resigning later this month on August 31st. Rove will leave his White House chief of staff position as one of the few remaining members of George W. Bush's original cabinet members that followed him to the White House in 2001. He is known as a bare-knuckle politician who holds the title of being Bush's longest-serving and closest aide. During the announcement today Rove's voice broke many times, betraying the obvious emotional undertow that the announcement had. George W. Bush stood behind his aide the entire time, patting him on the back encouragingly.
A bridge that was currently under construction in central China collapsed today killing 14 and injuring 22. The bridge, which spanned the Jiantuo River, was built as a terrorist attraction. Construction workers were removing scaffolding from the structure when it randomly collapsed on Monday. 65 people remain missing from the collapse, most of which were local farmers who had been recruited to help with the project.The head of a major Chinese toy manufacturing company hung himself in his own warehouse over the weekend. The report of the suicide comes from China's own state-controlled news media which claims that Zhang Shuhong, the Hong Kong businessman, killled himself after recalls of over a million toys that his company built for Mattel happened. No independent confirmation of the suicide can be found and calls to the main office of the corporation were immediately hung up on.
A Russian train heading from Moscow to St. Petersburg derailed late Monday after the driving engineer heard a loud "bang" under the wheels which overturned numerous carriages and wounded numerous passengers. Russian Railways are reporting the incident as an outcome of "unauthorized interference in the functioning of the train." Eyewitnesses claim the derailment followed after two explosions on the track occurred. A conductor on the train took a video on his cell phone of the incident which shows a six foot crater in the ground where rails should have been.
Five family members fell over 65 feet from a ferris wheel in South Korea, killing them all. The car that they were riding in unexpectedly overturned in an amusement park, sending the family plummeting toward pavement. Two members of the family survived after having hung on to the handholds in the gondola. The ferris wheel in question was 216 feet high and one survivor described the scene: "the slowly moving gondola suddenly stopped and turned upside down and family members fell in a flash" following a blownout window in the car. Investigations have commenced.An Estonian man was caught driving a car while under the influence which was only complicated when it was found that he was blind. Three people were also in the car which were giving him directions on how to drive. The man was arrested for the same infraction 20 weeks ago. The blind man is expected to serve jail time for repeating the incident and police are trying to court him so that they can confiscate his car.
