3D photos of centuries old anatomical models
The Stanford Medical Center is using stereophotography to document gorgeous Italian anatomical waxwork sculptures from the 18th and 19th centuries. Clement Susini (1757-1814) created more than 2,000 of the sculptures to educate medical students. A team from Stanford University Medical Media and Information Technologies (SUMMIT) collaborated with colleagues from the University of Bologna and 3D photographer Bernard Makinson to document the sculptures, currently stored at the Museo delle Cere Anatomiche Luigi Cattaneo. The team has put the first test photos on Flickr as both anaglyphs and "mono" photos. The former are quite spectacular when seen through red-blue glasses. Oh, ewww. That tangle of stuff in his throat looks just like the stir-fry I made the other night.
BoingBoing handles my obsession with anatomy and ancient work on it most spectacularly. It's great to read this place.
That said, the ear jutting on this one looks like Hannibal left something behind.
I'm glad BoingBoing picked up this Flickr stream as well as the Bassett Collection.
I think once you get past the "ew" factor, it is really fascinating to see what we really made of.

One word (or is it two?): View-Master.
I just realized that the new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen has red/green glasses at the end. It gives a 3d effect with a bit of a skew to these images, the effect is still there it's just a bit trippy. Kind of makes you dizzy, in a way that makes it hard to read books at long stretches of time. Great collection of stereophotography all around, going to look for my red blue specs tomorrow.
@ "TENN", heh I happen to be watching Silence of the Lambs. Just finished Hannibal. I love this series.
mmmmmmmm, brains! ( sllluuuurpp) i can see his DELICIOUS bbbraainnsss! (ssslobbber) mmmmmmmmm. don't forget the A-1.
Lucky you! I need to get the series. What's your opinion on Hannibal Rising? It lacks the amazing Mister Hopkins, of course, and destroys the batshit crazy man with no past figure... But as a seperate movie, I quite like it.
Any movie that has a child eating its sibling is alright in my book.
