Daily Bite: Minty Alternative

Mint_2 For those of you who, like me, consider the mint julep to be a waste of fine bourbon, consider the Derby Day (i.e., May 3) offerings at The Fifty/50 (2047 W. Division St.), which, in addition to such Louisville food icons as the Hot Brown sandwich and Kentucky burgoo (a spicy stew), will serve a 10 Cane Mint Julep.

The drink is made with 10 Cane Rum, homemade mint syrup, fresh mint and crushed ice, and thus more closely resembles a caipirinha than a traditional mint julep. Sacrilege? Maybe. But at least they're not polluting perfectly good bourbon.

Gee, I thought something made from Rum, Mint, Ice and Syrup sure sounds like a Mojito?

Caipirinhas are traditionally made with fresh lime, sugar, and cachaca-a Brazilian cane rum. They do not call for mint. I think you meant a mojito.
The weather is actually perfect to start thinking about caipirinhas and there are a lot of great premium cachacas out there. I would be interested in seeing a story on that.
