Third down (OK, third season) for 'Friday Night Lights'

Several other critics wrote up the "Friday Night Lights" TCA session on Sunday, so I'll just point you toward their words.

All I'd really add is that I asked executive producer Jason Katims how he hoped the press would cover the show -- if he was hoping for pieces to run when the show comes back on DirecTV in October. He said yes to that. I think in any case I was planning to run a review when the show arrives on DirecTV Oct. 1. I'd guess there will be yet more press when the show airs on NBC in February 2009.

Also, it's worth noting that the version of the show that will air on DirecTV and NBC will be slightly different -- it sounds like there will be slightly more content on the DirecTV version.

From my colleagues:

  • Terry Knox mentioned the new "FNL" call-in show, and also mentioned some cast changes.
  • Alan Sepinwall was in the post-panel scrum with several of us and wrote up a good summary of what Katims said. Katims told us about some new characters and also mentioned that the couple that "FNL" spent much of last season trying to get together -- Tyra and Landry -- won't be a couple for long when the new season begins.
  • Korbi Ghosh of Zap2it.com got lots from the scrum as well.
  • "Senior year" will be a theme for much of the season, as Matt Webb Mitovich pointed out. As Matt noted, there's good news for Rigg-Lyla fans (a story development that even Taylor Kitsch, who plays Riggs, wasn't aware of until Minka Kelly, who plays Lyla, mentioned during the panel on Sunday). Mike Ausiello, who was in the scrum with us, has a post on Season 2 plot developments here.
  • One reporter asked this: "For Adrianne and Jesse, if you guys had to commit another crime and cover it up, what would it be and could you get away with it again?"
  • Jesse Plemons, who plays Landry, said this: "I think we should start robbing stuff, Bonnie and Clyde style." He added a moment later, "I hope Landry is done with his criminal ways, but I don't really know how to respond to that. ... I would like to see, just the fact that it's still with him, if that's subtle or whatever it is, but I hope he doesn't kill anyone else. That was rough."
  • I interviewed Taylor Kitsch after the session, he had just returned from a trip to Africa with Connie Britton and toured Uganda and Kenya and become more aware of a charity called the African Children's Choir. I hope to post more on that interview soon, in which he also discussed his role in the film "X4."
  • Also, Kitsch is now calling Kyle Chandler "Chans" and Connie Britton "Cons."
