Wolverine Delayed, Too? Fox Says No

In October the release date for X-Men Origins: Wolverine made headlines, being set for May 1st, 2009. As the Writers Strike continues to loom onwards, a number of big films have been delayed because the writers aren't working. Earlier this week Sony's big Angels & Demons was hit hard and pushed back from December 2007 to May 2008. Now a report from Cinema Blend claims that Wolverine has been hit, too, but that Baz Luhrmann's Australia is causing the film to be delayed, not writers. Despite this rumor, the untrustworthy folks at Fox came out with a statement, claiming they're still trying to make sure everything stays on schedule with production.

Apparently Australia is filming on all of the stages at Fox in Sydney, Australia and Wolverine can't start its setup in the studios. So this actually has nothing to do with the Writers Strike? I'm confused... Either way, Fox made this statement to try and calm the situation.

"We are still planning to begin principal photography in January. We have every intention of keeping this on schedule. Australia is a Fox production as well, so we will work with that area of our production group as best we can to make both production schedules work (not to mention availability of our star of both - Hugh Jackman)."

While this doesn't actually disprove the original report that the film might be delayed, it does show that they're trying to make things work out, almost at any cost. Thankfully Wolverine has 17 months until it hits theaters and it sounds like David Benioff's script was finished before the writers went on strike. I don't think Fox wants to move Wolverine from its May 1st slot at all. And they've got a lot of wiggle room if they need it anyway.

I really hope Fox works out their issues with the production on this, because I really want it to turn out good. I'm trying to "forget" about Wolverine this coming year, since there's no need to worry about it, and instead enjoy Iron Man, The Dark Knight, and Hellboy II, and then come back to it once we start hitting the end of 2008. But is Hollywood start to crack given more and more delays show up every day, even those not connected to writers?

As a follower of the movie Australia, my understanding is that it's only taking up one soundstage, not all eight. Plus Hugh Jackman stars in both, so they have to wait for Australia to be finished anyway, which is supposed to be at the end of this month or very beginning of December. And I thought Wolverine was supposed to start filming on January 14 in New Zealand (according to a New Zealand news site).

Recently an article ran in a paper here in Australia showing Hugh Jackman and his son enjoying a day at Bondi Beach. In the photos he looked very Wolverine-like (bulked up and sporting the trademark mullet chops), and the article said he is preparing for filming in Wolverine. Not sure if this contributes much, but to see Jackman in shape and ready to go perhaps means it going to happen sooner rather than later?

Hugh doesn't have the mullet chops yet - that beard is required for the movie Australia which is still filming but should wrap in about two weeks. He's had that beard since April.
