Screen Actors GuildThe nominees for the 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards have been announced. Yet another awards show in the very top tier (which also contains the Golden Globes and Academy Awards) is the Screen Actors Guilds Awards, where the actors themselves choose the best performances from amongst their peers. It might not be the absolute best actor who is chosen (that is always debatable), but having some friends who are classically trained actors, one thing I do know is that actors very harshly critique other actors. Without further ado, here are the nominations.

The 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, the only industry accolades devoted solely to actors honoring actors, will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, January 27th at 8PM EST from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles.

What happened to a Best Actor nod for Johnny Depp?

2

What happened to Sweeney Todd?

Where the heck is Johnny Depp,Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton? I guess only boring junk gets nominated! I am sooooooo sick of Jolie and Blanchette I could puke! All we need is cannot act, everywhere, being shoved down our throats: katherine Heigl! and the night would be topped off! Juno? A teen gets pregnant! Man what an origional storyline THAT is! I think I will go see Sweeney Todd again on that night instead.

I love the fact that Viggo Mortensen keeps getting nominated, It would be nice if he would win, one, I think he is a great actor, don't get me wrong I love Johnny Depp but I haven't been able to See Sweeney Todd YET.

You know, I wasn't really a fan of Viggo in Eastern Promises. In fact, I hated the movie. Probably on my list for worst of the year. He was "good", at least quite "different" than Aragon, but I really didn't like him. He's like Jack Nicholson with older folks. They love him and think he's great, but to me, he's just the same old ecentric character over and over. Not saying that Viggo is the same over and over, but I'm saying the fact that some people really like him and think he's great while I think he really didn't stand out at all in Eastern Promises.

No nominations for Atonement? Nor for Sweeney Todd? I mean at least I expected Johnny for Best Actor, what is wrong with you?

victoria on Jan 15, 2008

7

Johnny Depp's performance was MORE than worthy of a nomination. Maybe SAG doesn't like that he lives in the South of France and avoids the Hollywood thing.

Patricia Janson on Jan 26, 2008

8

LET'S FACE IT ...THIS IS ALL POLITICAL...JOHNNY DEPP IS SO MUCH BETTER IN EVERYTHING HE DOES THAN ANY OF THE REST OF THEM AND THEY CAN'T TAKE IT....HE'S RIGHT TO AVOID THE HOLLYWOOD SCENE...CONGRATULATIONS ARE ALWAYS IN ORDER FOR JOHNNY..HE'S THE BEST!

KATE on Jan 27, 2008

I also think it compleatly sucks that Sweeny Todd and my Johnny were not nominated. What the HELL is this world comming to!!! He is awsome and that movie was awsome. Who votes for this shit anyway?? Screw thies retarted ass movies....im only watching for the Greys Amatomy and Ugly Betty cast.

No Johnny at the SAG awards? Utter twaddlespeak says I. He's the very best of the very best ... and the denizens of Hollyweird know it. They're jealous.

Jennifer on Jan 27, 2008

11

No Johnny Depp PLEAZ! I absolutely agree with Kate, they are all jealous of him. That man can play any role.. Im soo glad he avoids the hollywood scene.. He won the PEOPLE's Choice Award, that should tell him something - we appreciate him.. His fans. I have been a fan of him for years... Maybe he should switch to Scientology and adopt babies from Africa and than he will get recongized by SAG.

I wonder if Johnny even cares about the awards. I think he is just happy with his family and with enough money to pick and choose the parts he does. And, I'm glad he does.

marie on Jan 27, 2008

I don't think Johnny Depp cares one way or another about the award. Hollywood is a strange political place. I guess thats why he stays as far away as possible. He has more talent than hollywood can stomach. So in his place we are forced to stomach Brad and Angelina whos mission it is to making us sick. Do be admired in Hollywood one really does have to switch to scientology and adopt babies from Africa. Look at Tom Cruise's laughing face. But he is no Johnny Depp. Can't wait until your next movie. Johnny Depp took more risks than most actors nominated just for singing in Sweeney Todd. I think other nominees were also good choices but he should have been included.Helena Bonham Carter also deserved a nomination. They along with Tim Burton are all very talented and deserving recognition.

Viggo Mortensen is an excellent character actor. He was great in History of Violence, Hidalgo and of course Lord of the Rings Trilogy. He's a fresh face among seasoned actors and his contributions to the film industry are equal to if not better than his colleagues. I hope he is recognized by his peers at " The Oscars."

Mountaingal on Jan 28, 2008

16

Sorry Mountaingal but History of Violence was absolutley terrible. Viggo was great in the LOTR though. As for Johnny Depp, I love every role he takes on. One of the greats. I put together an interesting take of the SAG awards on my blog if anyone is interested. http://thewayweseeit.info/?p=725

Aaron on Jan 28, 2008

The SAG (awards?) greatly embarrassed itself, when it snubbed Johnny Depp. (and Helena! and Tim Burton! and 'Sweeney Todd' the movie/musical!) It showed itself as classless, and in fact sadly diminished the awards which WERE given. SAG apparently can't handle a really great talent, (genius??) in their midst. Johnny's creativity seems limitless, not to mention he can sing! SAG should be ashamed of itself........ What in your small world were you thinking!!

Cali Girl on Jan 29, 2008

I think you are leaving out that Daniel Day Lewis deserved his award he is a fabulous actor. I am as big a fan as anyone for Johnny Depp but I want to see him out of costume for awhile. Maybe SAG is tired of him being over the top (3 Pirates films and Sweeney Todd). I'd like to see him in some films that are not major productions or that have a great story again. I may be old compared to some of you because you sound quite young, I'm 33, but Viggo is an awesome actor in everything. As for Blanchett and Jolie, I love Blanchett but Jolie needs to do something without a F#&*'n accent, she doesn't do them well and we all know she's american. Oh, I last but not least James McAvoy was wonderful in Atonement. He didn't need dialogue you knew the whole story and every emotion by his face he deserved a nod.

Oh am I the only person who thought gone baby gone was a great movie, only one actor was nominated, what about ed harris and casey affleck for their roles?

BettyG on Jan 30, 2008

I have to agree with Alex on Viggo Mortensen. Sure, he's a great guy, no-ego Viggo, intelligent, takes pictures, paints, writes etc... etc...but he always seems to end up playing the same part over and over again. I never see much range in his acting in anything he does. Also, if he can't see that every time Cronenberg looks at him, he sees $$$ stamped on his NAKED behind like 'Mattel' on a Barbie doll - he can't be THAT intelligent. No matter the movie, he ends up naked or having sex in at least one scene. Read the blogs, Viggo - no one wants to hear how much you've perfected your Russian accent, they all just want to see your Danish booty and Cronenberg is happy to show it to the world. When I saw him with his young niece at the Oscars, I couldn't help but wonder if she had seen some of his latest movies.... I think he's given more credit than he is due because he is handsome and seems to be decent. His acting is judged by his pretty face and his personality - not by how well he can actually act. Johnny Depp - a REAL talent - I agree though - I'd like to see him in something out of costume again. He can take on pretty much whatever is tossed at him. I loved the acting in 'Gone Baby Gone' too BettyG. Casey belongs in front of the camera and his brother Ben needs to keep directing. I think they've found their niches.

I don't like the fact that when I google my name it comes up with someone else's message from this site attached to it the one that Alex Billington posted, he hates Eastern Promises, I loved it, and Viggo's performance was right on. So it would be nice if the powers that be on this site would fix that error it would be nice. I love ya Viggo Mortensen.

Maureen Braman on Feb 27, 2008

22

You guys are insane, I guess you haven't seen all the movies Viggo has acted in, GI Jane, The Lord of the Rings, Hidalgo and many more, I didn't watch Eastern Promises because Viggo was naked it, in that scene I saw a very vulnerable man fighting for his life. It was extreme with the stabbing in the eye, but I am pretty sure Russian mafia doesn't play fair. Viggo has taken on all the roles he hass been TOSSED in to. I saw a A History of Violence it wasn't terrible. I still love The Lord of the Rings the most out of all the Movies Viggo has been in and he didn't show his booty and he didn't end up in bed with anyone. !!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Johnny Depp he's great a great actor, but he is also type cast to a certain extent, Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, even in animation he gets typecast because he choses the roles, because he likes them just like Viggo does. They could always say no but they don't . He (Johnny) was also nominated for an Ocar and they didn't get nominated because the couldn't act. There are many great actors out there, Daniel Day Lewis , Ed Harris, the list goes on and on. Michael Keaton, Tom Hanks. Movies have been nominated before that I hated, and sometimes I would have preferred if a different actor won an award but I am not going to sit here and say someone has no talent because my favorite didn't win, if they couldn't act they would never be hire. Aloha

Maureen Braman on Feb 28, 2008

23

If they couldn't act they would never be hired? Oh please! Viggo wasn't naked and in bed with anyone in "Lord of the Rings" because he wasn't well known then. Peter Jackson had never even heard of him. Now that it is plain he is a favorite with the female movie goers, a director is going to put him in as many gratuitious sex scenes as they can dream up. And, I notice he never says no. Maybe the scene in EP was a man fighting for his life but he's the one who suggested he fight the scene with no clothes on and DC was just WAITING for him to pick that idea up. I'm not mad because my favorite actor didn't win, the actor I thought should have won did win. It's simply my opinion that VM is not a great actor and he gets more than he deserves in the way of praise because of his looks. Period. There are lots of actors out there who get the same because of their looks but, to me, VM seems to get the most. If you think people with the $$$ only hire actors because they 'can act', you don't know the movie business very well.

JoEllen Hamilton on Mar 13, 2008

I have seen a lot of actors that can't really act on the big screen and little screen, actors not giving a convincing performance, not being able to cry or an actor just looking off to the side like they are reading que cards. My family has worked in the business for qiuite awhile I know it well enough. In the scene in Eastern Promises I am just wondering if everyone thought he was supposed to fight for his life holding on to his towel. I am pretty sure if you were in the situation the towel is the last thing you would think about, and he may have thought the same thing. To me the movie wasn't in depth enough but it told the story. I don't think Peter Jackson would have made Viggo naked even if he were WELL KNOWN. He liked his talent and looks, Most people who have seen LOTR loved him in the role. Die hard LOTR book readers didn't think the movie matched the books enough. The saying goes opinions are like....... we all have one you have yours I have mine, I like the way Viggo acts you don't , I think he is fine, an interesting poet artist, you don't OH WELL..... Life goes on......I'm not mad your not mad, we have something in common.....hee hee I guess if we all liked the same things did all the same things, all of us straightened our hair, we wouldn't be unique. Human not BORG, LOLOLOL. I just didn't like my name attached to someone else's comment when I looked up my name.

Maureen Braman on Mar 13, 2008

25

Good for you Maureen - you are taking the high road and I am too. I don't want you to think I'm a fanatic who gets on blogs and blasts people who don't agree with me. And, no I wouldn't expect him to hold on to the towel while he fought - (what a picture!) but I wonder how much these scenes are contrived with his looks in mind in the first place. And you are right again about you like his acting and I don't. He never makes me cry or feel in sync with his character or feel sorry for his character or root for his character OR hate his character. A good example is the little girl who played in Atonement. I went to see it with a girlfriend of mine and at the end, she cried while I was sooooo mad at that little girl! To me, THAT'S acting. VM never brings out any emotions in me and once again you are right - that's what makes the world go 'round! Thanks for being so sweet! You are a person I'd 'debate' with anytime with pleasure! Oh, BTW - I DO like Viggo's paintings and photographs. That's where I think his real talent lies. j

I just figured I could sit here and defend him until the cows come home , I LOVE him, his acting his art everything, and my husband says as long as I don't start stalking the guy he is okay with it. LOL ,but when people don't like someone it is hard to convince them other wise, I pretty much like most actors but some just rub me the wrong way. I love Sean Bean but I am not a die hard, but some fans love him everything about him and no other actor will do. I am sure the same can be said for the Johnny Depp fans at the top of the page. I have always loved him had a little crush even..... but Viggo is my fave..... To me he was perfectly cast in EP his looks his acting....just reminded me of a Russian mobster. Kinda like Vladamir Putin only with hair. I have so far loved him in all his roles.. I am a defender of VIGGO, goose bumps. I do have to say I never hear anyone ask why did that actress have to show her boobs in that movie, (I mean any actress in any movie) or her cootie cat, it is accepted usually with no questions. But he gets a no one would see the movie if he didn't show his a.. I wanted to see A History of Violence and I didn't know he showed his butt. I liked the movie before I saw his butt and after. well here I go again. Love to all you Movie fans out there!!

Oh no MB - I feel that way about female actors too! We weren't talking about any though so I didn't mention it. In fact, it's much worse with female actors - they really get exploited! And the double standards! Movies are STILL pairing young women with old men - and they do that with Viggo too. Not that he's old but he's getting older. I'd like to see him play opposite someone his own age for a change and act darn you - ACT! ;-D Ok enough said! I am a fan of Johnny Depp like you are a fan of VM - there's enough to go round for everyone! cheers!

JoEllen Hamilton on Mar 14, 2008

Hey your crossing the line on the and acting comment...LOL I would say the youngest actress he played a romantic interest was Liv Tyler and she is what about 31 now. the rest have been closer to his age. I am married to a man who is 11 years older than me so if the age difference is to much like Gwyneth Paltrow and Michael Douglas I would say that is to much. she is about 37 and he is a dirty old man, ha ha, mid 60's. Speaking of Old Men.... I can't wait to see Indiana Jones!!!!

Maureen Braman on Mar 14, 2008

This isn't really necessary since this type of award doesn't really seem to matter to an actor with such amazing talent (not even mentioning that he is HOTT!) just talent, because actors such as Johnny Depp are good because they're natural talents. Anyway, actors such as Johnny Depp don't seem to be bothered by being scipped over by SAG awards or not getting an award for best actor at the Oscars again. He is loved no matter what by his fans, and his fans go to all of his movies and watch every movie the confidence that its a Johnny Depp movie, which means it will be great. Of corse there are other actors/actress like this, I could list many. Johnny Depp happens to be my favorite though and has been my favorite since Edward. He always brings his personal touch to every single part he plays no matter what it is, and if you are truly a Johnny fan, you would remember his facial expression as Edward when he is clipping a doggy? This face, is the exact expression he has when Sweeney Todd first shaves the first face in the competition in Sweeney Todd. I am just saying that Johnny is one actor that will prove himself again and again. He has been around for a long long time and will continue to be around forever. It wont matter about some dumb award ceremony really. Oh, and by the way... just a little P.S. I think it was so awsome the three actors came up to the plate to be there after Heath Ledgers sad departing and fill in for his part in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, so thanks to Jude Law, Collin Farrel and Johnny Depp the last movie that Heath would be remembered for will be completed. Again, there are two great actors and Johnny is still my favorite. haha...

Tracy D. on Mar 15, 2008

I have read that when an actor or actress and picture win the SAG award they are usually going to win the rest of the awards. If that is true and it seems to be then I suppose everyone else just shows up to smooze with other actors and have a good time. I know I would go even if I knew I wouldn't win just for a night out and a bit of fun... I think we all stopped talking about this award anyway we are just talking about acting, in general. Heath will be greatly missed he was a very good actor, there really needs to be some regulations in the prescription drug system, one country and state she be able to know what another state and country is giving someone. So they know what not to give. It was really a senseless death. RIP Heath
