Brett Ratner Directing Beverly Hills Cop IV With Eddie Murphy

by

Beverly Hills Cop

Why oh why does Hollywood have a fascination with the 80s?! Every last 80s everything – cartoon series, action figure, comic book, movie – is being remade, restarted, rebooted, or revived. And while sometimes they turn out great (Transformers) they all too often turn out terrible. Here’s another one to add to the long list of dreaded revivals – Beverly Hills Cop. But that’s not the worst of it regarding this news. Brett “I Ruined the X-Men Franchise” Ratner has been hired as the director for Beverly Hills Cop IV and Eddie “I’m Not Funny” Murphy will be back, too. Not only did I not want to see this get made to begin with, but now I really have no interest at all. As much as I didn’t want to report this news, because it falls along the same lines as the Rocky news, I’ve got to get it out there so we can all mourn together.

Eddie Murphy himself actually approached Paramount with the idea of reviving the franchise and reprising his role as Detroit detective Axel Foley. Maybe that’s because he’s on a downward spiral and is trying every last option? Apparently Paramount caved to his demands and has brought on Lorenzo di Bonaventura, of Transformers and G.I. Joe, to produce. Jerry Bruckheimer actually produced the original three, release in 1984, 1987, and 1994, but has absolutely no involvement in this revival. A writer has not been hired yet. Paramount plans to release this in the summer of 2010.

Unless Eddie Murphy really plans to turn himself around and pull out a performance that lives up to the original three, I really don’t see this being good at all. The idea of Beverly Hills Cop IV is hard enough to believe anyway. Why? Because of all the other films from the 80’s to bring back from the dead, it had to be one that already was a trilogy and wasn’t that memorable to begin with. Maybe I’m not the biggest fan of Beverly Hills Cop to begin with, but this is one of those few projects that I am not looking forward to. Can Brett Ratner and Eddie Murphy actually successfully revive the Beverly Hills Cop franchise?

Although I really get annoyed by the fact they keep making sequels based on nothing but money, I am actually looking forward to this one. Eddie is in it. Although he sucks at being funny lately, he IS the Beverly Hills cop, and I think hill will do good in this one. But the sequels frenzy HAS to stop!

Can't beleive u think Transformers was cool. Lame plot, lame characters i don't even think i could call it a proper kids movie 🙁 Sorta dissapointed now 🙁

Although I enjoyed Transformers personally, I was speaking for the fact that the majority of the moviegoing public (in the US) also enjoyed it. It even has a 7.5 on IMDb!

I'm strangely excited for this. Brett Ratner ruined X-Men, and even ruined his own Rush Hour franchise. But I do think he is a good fit for this film. And who says a director can't come back and prove himself good again? Or an actor for that matter. Eddie Murphy was great in Beverly Hills cop. If he goes back to a character he knows well, then he may be able to pull this off really well!

So brett messes up rush hour3 and now he wants to mess up another franchise. Great. Lets hope eddie has free reign to do what he does best.

I don't see how Brett Ratner could ruin this franchise - it ruined itself long ago. The first film is fun but the other two are dire.

i don't understand how anyone could like transformers. ...yeah, i can't let go 😀 this piece of crap scene where the robots sneak around in the garden?! The fucking (am i allowed to write 'fucking'? if that's a problem i appologize and take it back) military pressed in there to make it a little more pear-harbour-rish? and this -there's no superlative for bad which can describe it- lead cahracter... oh, please stop me... someone? but i have to admit, that i liked beverly hills cop back in the days... and i watched nearly every eddy murphy movie, so i'm quite excited how it turns out. even if i agree, that it's never gonna be a realy good movie.... maybe worse than that.

"Transformers" was good(as millions agreed). I personally liked "X-Men 3". Maybe Brett Ratner CAN revive the "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise. I thought Tony Scott rocked part 2. I would be happy if he returned, even Martin Brest. So what if they revive the 80s film franchises. "Rambo", "Rocky", "Live Free or Die Hard", and "Indy" were good enough films to say the least. Every franchise has potential as long as the right script is chosen.

meh, to say he (Ratner) ruined the X-men franchise is excessive, in my humbled opinion those movies were ruined from the start and Bryan Singer is overrated. i do recall saying i'd watch another BHC over that meet Dave junk, but i feel Eddie is pulling what alot of the big 80's names are doing, one last good movie with their hit franchise before fading off into obscurity, Schwarzenegger did it with Terminator 3, Stallone did it with Rocky Balboa and Rambo, some can argue Ford did it with this recent Indy movie, i guess it's ol' Eddie's turn.

I just want to know who they're going to get, to sing "Neutron Dance."

Yeah well Jerry Bruckheimer didn't produce the third film which was made in 1994 not in the 80s, Eddie's carreer isn't on a downward spiral and he can be funny too if the role is right. So next time get your facts right. I really want to see this film.

Producers, D.P.'s, ancillary casting... they will all be irrelevant. Brett Ratner's directing will negate any attempts at making this a quality project.

Beverly Hills Cop the original was a damn funny movie, and I recall the 2nd one was pretty good also. So there's always hope that a great script will be written for this. As for ressurecting franchises from the 80's, Rocky Balboa was an amazing and suprisingly great film, considering the odds against it. In fact, it was so strong that it could have stood all on it's own, without knowing anything about the 5 that came before it. Die Hard, Indiana Jones, even Rambo have all come back recently, and were surprisingly vibrant and worthy sequels. So who knows...

Hm....personally as a movie lover, i thought the characters in transformers were hollow and void, Megan Fox is just a hot body with dead eyes...and the movie was so mediocre the only thing that saved it was slow mo CGI crazy big robot action sequences. The fact that millions loved it has nothing to do with the actual quality of the movie. All the characters were pretty much 1 dimesnional...just bad. Iron Man gave those little robots in the lab more personality than in all of Transformers. Anyway, all these revivals I personally think are due to $$$$, and thats pretty much it. No need to create thoughtful new ideas when you can just toss together an old franchise and have a decent chance to make your money back on it. Also people have strong memories of childhood, so most people will see/buy on dvd eventually....just more easy money. I really hope Eddie Murphy can do this he deserves to have a good movie out, which will maybe help us forget all these bad ones he KEEPS MAKING (but probably not)

OMG!!!!! Dudes what, Eddie Murphy is not making any money so he has to go back to the old days. Maaaaaan what is this coming too, Everyone was so upset when the writters strike happend, I am wishing it came back. What the hell is going on here, all remakes, so all these writters were complaining for what so there script remakes can be put into play. BOGUS!!!!!! Hollywood needs to take there head out of there A%$ and get it together. Pretty soon youll see a remake to STARMAN, or The Goonies, Yep i said guys, GOONDOCKS!!!! How mad you you guys be if they remade the GOONIES? Hey Alex Billington Lets start that as a topic, HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF GOONIES WOULD BE REMADE? I would really like to sees peoples response.

You are all talking nonsense. I want a Goonies 2 and a Starman remake. Since you mention it, I wouldn't mind a Bogus 2 either. I always rather liked Whoopi Goldberg and Gerard Depardieu in that. Beverly Hills Cop 4 is happening, like it or not. With any luck the mayor will call the chief, the chief will call the deputy chief and Taggart, Rosewood, Bogermil, Inspector Todd, Biddle, Lutz, Jeffrey Friedman, Marcy and the red Ferrari will all get their asses chewed off.

Eddie Murphy on May 29, 2008

Yeah yeah yeah, Eddie better not be all humble in this one either. Thats why he's making movies about aliens that look like him playing to be him.. hahahha

I loved Transformers but I think that's because I had zero expectations for it. 🙂 I agree about the whole money thing with hollywood and sequels but I would welcome back Axel Foley at anytime. #27 Your list is spot on.

Janet on May 29, 2008

27

I enjoyed BHC 1 and 2 a great deal, but by the time 3 was rolled out Eddie Murphy could only play a caricature of his former self, a role he continues in today; he used to BE funny, now he can only TRY to be funny, too often with uncomedic results. I hope this movie never gets made, and won't watch it if it does (even for free on cable).

Ya'll think eddie need money but he doesn't! Who do ya think played the donkey on shrek and all those installments to the sequels? He is paid! Keep it on the real peeps...every actor falls off at one point or another! Oh and for the record for me Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2 I loved...3rd was some kiddie shiznit and not my style of Axle Foley that peaked my interest...I hope they do bring it back to the old roots and give eddie his free reign on this!

Daggra on May 30, 2008

29

stop the insanity! this movie will suck just like all of Eddie's recent movies and the reason Shrek didn't was because you couldn't see his face!!

thejugfather on May 30, 2008

30

since i refuse to acknowledge that BHC 3 even exists, I have a hard time imagining that there would be a BHC 4 that will be any good. maybe eddie can team up with bruce willis and they can snuff out a terrorist plot at their retirement community for old cops in southern california.

Brett Ratner ruined X-Men? Really? I thought 2 and 3 were great. Part one was held back by it's low budget but it was still cool. It was X-Men! Rush Hour 3 was good too. Maybe my taste is suspect but I think a lot of people enjoyed those movies too. But BHC IV does sound like they're wanting to cash-in on the 80s sequels that are arising as of late. Could be a good movie tho. Wait and see.

JudasBarronx on May 30, 2008

32

It's a wait and see for me. So far i haven't been thoroughly disappointed with any of these 80's revivals (though GI Joe is starting to look "Street fighter The Movie-ish")... Let's not forget Brett did the Rush Hours & Money talks, which are movies that tried to emulate Beverly Hills Cops' sucess. As long as it doesn't look like some direct to video/ Universal Soldier II caliber movie, I'll be patient for now.

jmoneysolo on May 30, 2008

33

I never liked any of the BHC's. Not even the first one. They all looked liked made-for-TV, possibly not that good. Eddie Murphy hasn't been really good since, well, 48 Hours. I mean like a real- actor good.

i can agree to say the movie transformers had a good audience responce, cuz it did 🙂 But to say it's great? I just can't agree, and i'm sorry i'm naggin' ya about it, but 99.9% of all your reviews agree with me ^_^, so it's freaky that u give it a  🙂 The main character is a douche, seriously, selling his grandfathers old stuff on ebay to buy a car, wanting the hot chick...I dunno...Maybe cuz i'm not from the US but i find that sorta thing lame and cliche', but then again most of my favorite...if not all...Movies are from the U.S. [not including Meaning of life, or any other python film :)] :)) If i look at it as a kids movie, like spy kids or something....Maybe i could say it's ok, but had a long talk to my kid about whats really important in life.....Just the hot chix 🙂

I take back what I said earlier...this mtv article is claiming that BHC 4 would be geared towards a PG audience. Are you kidding me? “10-year-old kids, 12-year-old kids don’t really know the old ‘Beverly Hills Cop.’ So it’s an opportunity to make it new for kids,” Ratner said. “The same way it felt for me watching ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ when I was a kid, that’s what I want to do for kids today.” http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/06/03/beverly-hills-cop-4-may-be-geared-towards-kids-says-brett-ratner/

i was one of the location managers on "cop 2"..directed by tony scott...&........i would love to work on "cop 4" as one of the location mgrs..............i think that the sparks between eddy murphy & brett ratner, would fire up this paramount sequel.......& bring back judge reinhold & john ashton, as aging bev. hills cops, & yeah, lots of girls..........&..car crashs on rodeo drive, during midweek traffic, crossing over wilshire blvd, & also, sunset blvd,...... ending up in the lobby of the bev wilshire hotel? expensive? sure, but i moved a thousand people out of a lower east side street, for almost a year, on "godfather, part 2"...it cost about 2 million, but it was worth it ..............& no script, yet.........may 09.........sounds like fun!........& brett ratner is the right director for this long awaited sequel.........i'm available..JACK ENGLISH....location manager, hollywood, calif.......
