Sci-Fi Viking Flick Outlander Gets a Slick Poster

So get this - two aliens crash on Earth during the time of the Vikings. One is a human-like creature with good intentions who helps the Vikings. The other is a nasty alien creature who wants to kill them. That is Outlander. This reminds me of Dragon Wars, in the sense that it is some sort of odd creature flick that no one really knows about but sounds pretty awesome. It also reminds me of Pathfinder, which was the biggest pile of crap I've ever seen. Thankfully early reports from Cannes confirm that this is definitely better than both of those. Courtesy of STYD we've got our first look at the poster for Outlander. I wish we had a trailer, but alas, The Weinstein Company is holding this one hostage.
Other than James Caviezel, who plays the human alien named Kainan, John Hurt, Ron Perlman, Jack Huston, and cutie Sophia Myles all star as Vikings. The film apparently showed up in the film market at Cannes, where a few people happened to catch some screenings of it. Fightfest said it was an "absolute joy to watch," adding that "there's gore aplenty, the thrills are many and the CGI monster is pretty good too." That's all the convincing I need to add this to my list of films to check out!
During the reign of the Vikings, Kainan (James Caviezel), a man from a far-off world, crash lands on Earth, bringing with him an alien predator known as the Moorwen. Though both man and monster are seeking revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry.
The Weinstein Company has the domestic distribution rights to Outlander, but currently is keeping it hidden under their bed. In fact, I hadn't even ever heard about it until today. The film is directed and co-written by up-and-coming filmmaker Howard McCain, of The Unspeakable previously. There's a website for the film that can be found right here, which includes a plethora of photos as well as all the information you could ever need. Hopefully these minor mentions here (and on SlashFilm) will kick start the buzz on this creature feature, because I definitely want to kick back and enjoy some sci-fi Viking mayhem.

This poster isn't new - it's been kicking around for some time - poster is awful... lighting on each character doesn't mix well at all. Film sounds promising though.

Is everyone mad!!!! this poster should be burned, it has to be the worst photoshoped poster ive seen. And Why does everyone compair mythical movies with Lord of the Rings. There was no vikings in Lord of the rings, nor any aliens in transformers. They were droids in Transformers, which doesnt really constitute as alien Life Forms! Lord of the rings was a standard, the bar was set for that movie really high. Remember when star wars first came out how it set new standards for sci-fi films. Well when lord of the rings came out it set new standards for mythical films and surpassed all previous films of the catagory. This film will hardly be in either catagory i doubt it will surpass the first predator or even a terminator status. Star wars will always be the films to beat... Im talking about IV, V, VI

I got to go with #8, this poster is truely low-budget. I went to the movie website, it's really amatuer, and they show everything, even the alien monster, bad thing. With a movie like this the advertising should be subtle, set up the suspense, don't show every actor on the poster. It drips with Direct-to-DVD. They should have done something like a viking ship, next to a spaceship sticking out of the water. That is all they would have needed. Some times more is bad.

As one of the few people who really enjoyed Pathfinder (I like Viking movies in general), I hope this turns out okay. Sounds like a plot from a book I read too.

First off, I don't mind the poster, but they do push the LOTR connection way too hard. And I'm pretty sure it's a painting of various scenes composited together. Second, give my website a break. It's a fan effort and I've never claimed otherwise. I recently switched to an improved look for the site but not all the pages have been converted so a lot of the old content doesn't show as nice if you have Firefox or Safari. Personally I think that the movie has a few more tricks up it's sleeves regarding the monster, and that just seeing a mock-up or design sketches won't really compare to seeing it live and breath on screen. I don't really know what parts you think look "Cheap" but most of the images on the site were contributed by background performers from the film and show little of the main character costumes and by no means reflect whatever lighting etc etc that will be used in the finished film. Maybe the costumes look ragged but that's because they went for a more authentic viking look (as authentic as a movie about aliens landing on earth can be 🙂 ). So the buildings, costumes, tools, etc were well researched. Other than a handful of stills we haven't really seen anything substantial from the actual film to be able to judge how it looks, but what there is looks pretty good. That said, it didn't have a hundred million dollar budget either.
