Bryan Singer's Valkyrie Moved Back to December!

From August to February to December. Finally, they've made a smart move. United Artists has moved the release date of Bryan Singer's WWII film Valkyrie from February next year to December 26th this year due to "strength of their recent test screenings." The change was reported by Ain't It Cool News and comes a few days after the first official opening was supposed to take place. When we first announced Valkyrie, the release date was set for August 8th, 2008 - last Friday. They later changed the release to February next year, a move that most said was completely idiotic, possibly because of additional reshoots. However, the film is now back in a place where it rightfully belongs and will be up for major awards contention.
In other news, United Artists CEO Paula Wagner, who rebooted the studio nearly two years ago with Tom Cruise, has decided to leave the company. Coincidence that Valkyrie is just now being moved from an idiotic to a smart release date? There's a big hoopla on the back story that you can read on Deadline Hollywood if you wish. Otherwise, we'll stick to Valkyrie. The film will now be battling Defiance, the WWII film with Daniel Craig, that opens on December 12th. Both look fantastic, but my vote goes towards Defiance right now. However, you're more than welcome to watch the trailer for Valkyrie and make your own decision as well. Will this move help the success of Valkyrie?

Funny. I was just thinking about this movie this morning. Glad to see they've brought it back to this year. Yeah, it looks good, but not as good as Defiance. I'm not too enthralled by the trailer of Valkyrie though...a bit blase for me

Eh, wasn't the news that MGM had to move the release date from next year to this year to meet some deadline for UA's loan, or Merrill Lynch would revoke their line of credit? I'm not sure that screams faith in the movie so much as desperation to hold onto the credit line. Loan money is tight. I wonder if Merrill Lynch is combing through the contract looking for any way to revoke the creditline and get their money back? Now that would be the really big news in all of this. That would close down UA and maybe even MGM.

Good news, it seems like an Oscar film so it was idiotic for them to movie it to February like they did with THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL which would have benefited from then-Oscar buzz.

Is it just me or does this site flip flop over movies. I personally think this movie looks good...but when the release date got pushed back, this site was bashing it left and right...now it is saying it may be OScar worthy...how does that make any sense?

Remember ppl, all the bad buzz stems from the Trailer and February, NOT a test screening. Valkyrie was moved constantly because they were shooting/re-shooting action scenes. Defiance and Valkyrie on the same month- WWII here I come! Damn you Christmas! Hopefully both will be great, Defiance has the edge.

Yeah, they're due for an exciting teaser to get people on the horse - not to mention with his cameo in Tropical Thunder - right now could be a good opportunity to clinch/excite some fans

Don't get a lot of the Cruise hate. He's always been an interesting act to follow. A few duds here and there, sure, but Top Gun was twenty years ago. Twenty years near the top of the A-list is some achievement. And I'm liking the look of this here Valykrie. It reminds me a little of those ballsy war and thriller pics we had in the seventies, like The Day of the Jackal or The Eagle Has Landed. Here's hoping.
