Don Mancini Updates Details on the Child's Play Reboot

By the end of 2020, we'll probably see every horror movie remade, it's inevitable. As we first announced last October, Child's Play is one of the latest horror franchises being rebooted. The same producers who brought us all five of the previous Child's Play movies are doing this reboot, which should be a good sign, considering that doesn't usually happen. Additionally, Don Mancini, who wrote all of the Child's Play movies and directed Seed of Chucky, is both writing and directing this reboot, too. Quint from Ain't It Cool News caught up with Don and producer David Kirschner to talk about the Special Edition DVD and ended up spending some time chatting about the reboot - and it actually doesn't sound that bad.

First and foremost, Mancini explains why they decided to restart this franchise with a reboot. "I think what we are mainly responding to, David and I, is the will of the fans, which is really telling us that they want to see a scary Chucky movie again. They want to go back to the straightforward horror rather than the horror comedy." He adds that their main mission "is to make it really scary." Seed of Chucky from 2004 was the last film from the franchise, and as Mancini explains, the fans have gotten tired of the direction it was headed in and want to see it go back to its roots. "It's been four years since the last one, so it just seems like the timing is really good now for us to just recreate it in a way." I certainly hope they're right.

So what exactly will the reboot entail? "It's a reboot of the Chucky origin story," Mancini says. "We are telling the origin story again, but beyond certain broad stroke details, it's really quite a reinvention, I would say." Kirschner chimes in, adding that "I'm not even sure if I would say reinvention. I think Don has really created some really clever twists and expectations that a fan of the first Child's Play film, you will be surprised and shocked by, but it will follow, I think, very closely a lot of the first film." So it will be a similar origin story, but not entirely the same, like most reboots. He adds that the "audience thinks it is going to go one way and we will go another, even though the story is pretty similar."

As a fan of the original Child's Play, Child's Play 2, and Child's Play 3, but not a fan of Bride of Chucky or Seed of Chucky, I will say that it is rather reassuring to hear that they're trying to go back to the roots and create another terrifying horror movie. The first three Child's Play movies are definitely horror classics that even I've come to appreciate. And Mancini has a grasp on the series since he was the one who actually came up with the whole idea back in 1988. As for when we can expect to see it, Mancini says "I think we would love to have it out for next year, but I don't think it's going to happen."

I think the idea of a remake, is to give new ideas, new vision, new story. But if is the same old hell-toy, with the same old guys who produced it, and the same old guy who wrote it, what new can they offer? I mean, I understand the whole idea is to reinvent, but if you've been working on Chuchy for I-don't-know-how-many years, surely you'll do old stuff with new technology, and that's not interesting at all. 'Nuff said.

the problem with the old 80's slasher flicks is that with every sequel they became more and more of a joke. i mean we went from a frightening Freddy to a pun cracking one, Jason was great until we got Jason goes to hell and the worst insult being Jason X, i don't even want to begin with Texas Chainsaw Massacre. as a horror/Slasher movie fan i personally am glad someone is taking these movies and making them somewhat serious again, i rather have a AMERICAN remake over a Japanese Remake anyday!.

a reboot of the Chucky franchise???? I am speechless...who is the *&^%ing IDIOT who even suggested this??? if this is representative of what the movie industry has become then there is truly no hope of ever seeing a worthwhile film ever again...thank the stars that library's still exist....

I loved all the Chucky movies, I think they're all good in their own ways. The third one is my least favorite though, the original will always be the best. Fuck, I saw the first one last too, and when I saw it I was fucking scared.

#5 i dont think this a money motivated reboot. mostly because one of the guys who started it all is coming back. im a huge fan of chucky and ever sincei saw bride of chucky, i lost faith in the series. im actually really excited about this. ive always wanted to see charles lee ray as himself and i think this is the chance. i hope the production goes well

There is no money to be made in the Chucky franchise and everyone knows it. The last one was barely memorable to the mainstream non-fans and even to fans its like "ehhh" so anyone BUT the guys who originally did it wouldn't want anything to do with it. So it's not about the money for once.

I don't see much money here either, but I would perfer for them to do a sequel and just take out the comedy, I think that would be much more beneficial than redoing what we already know.

Damn! isn't seed of chucky enough. I think a special quirky director like Tim Burton is the only one who could make it his own, aside from the franchise. Another strategy would be to add some serious psychological realism with some political and cultural themes. Hopefully someone doesn't make this into another crappy Halloween franchise with B list actors.

Another reboot? Why not just a sequel? Didn't like where the story went I assume...maybe they shoudn't have made movies they didn't like then? When are they going to get to reboot my childhood beloved "Pupper Master" movies?

Just what I been waiting for. I was hoping that Chucky would take his job a little more seriously again. The Reboot is a beautiful thing. It will probably be the best thing that happen to the franchise. Me and other fellow Child's Play fans have been wanting to know more about Chucky. With the first movie (Which was the best one in my eyes) setting the standards for what came I can see you guys would have a serious task on your hands. But I have faith in Team Chucky lol. I totally think this movie is gonna blow....UP MY HEART! Yeah, I think this movie will make Chucky soo scary again, my heart will explode! The first childs play traumatized me.. SERIOUSLY! I couldn't, and STILL can look at dolls the same way. I just freak out if I have to sleep in a room full of them (excluding barbies... the creator of those were just too good at making non intimidating faces for their dolls lol). I used to have a "My Buddy"... and boy, after watching this movie (when I wasn't supposed to)... I freaked. Since the same people are making this, I have faith in this. I don't see why anyone WOULDN'T have faith in this, especially if they're a Child's Play fan (or victim in my case... lol). I just can't wait ^o^!! Lol
