Seth Rogen Picks Up Will Reiser's I'm With Cancer Project

Seth Rogen

Will Reiser's autobiographical comedy I'm With Cancer has been picked up by Mandate Pictures for Seth Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg to produce. The script is about Reiser's struggle to beat cancer, with a story centering on a 25-year-old who finds out he has the disease. Reiser was a producer for a few HBO and VH1 shows, including "Da Ali G Show". Rogen will have a supporting role in the film and I'm guessing Mandate will look for some big name actors and a director to turn this in a hit comedy. So although cancer really isn't funny, I'm expecting this to be a great comedy if Rogen took an interest in it.

Rogen and Goldberg are writing and producing Jay and Seth vs the Apocalypse for Mandate as well. I'm With Cancer is being fast tracked and will go out to directors this month in hopes of being pushed into production right away. This is one of those projects with so much confusing information, that I'm really not sure what to think about it yet. It doesn't seem like Rogen and Goldberg are actually writing the script, but I may be wrong. And I'm wondering what will make this so unique - what is the life of this guy all about in order to make it a good comedy? It'll be worth keeping an eye on, but that's about it for now.

Right on. Cancer really isn't funny, but there are a few out there who have found humor and light in dark places. Take Marisa Acocella Marchetto's incredible graphic novel Cancer Vixen or Miriam Engelberg's book Cancer Made Me a Shallower Person. Here's a great example from Cancer Vixen's cartoon blog: http://www.healthcentral.com/breast-cancer/c/26659/21376/aka-sex

I had cancer and was working on a similar script.... I'm excited and sad that I was beat my the person I hoped would do it... Rogen... But anyway -- Cancer is funny. Everything is. Or can be.

I am currently a 22 year old with cancer. The last film that was released about cancer had more to do with milking the pockets of America then portraying the truth of this horrible disease (it featured Cameron Diaz). I look forward to seeing a movie where people focus on laughter and the good stuff in life no matter how horrible their situation might be.

Re: Jacqueline I'm a survivor (29 yrs old) and actually feel the opposite. I'm frankly sick of cancer patients portrayed as positive angels who are completely at peace with the world. I can't comment on the Diaz movie you referenced (haven't seen it), but I know I would love to see a realistic portrayal of a person facing a potentially terminal illness. That means moments of laughter, sure, but more importantly the fear, worry, anger, frustration, confusion, anxiety, PAIN, heartache, helplessness and all the other baggage that comes along with "cancer." I fear this film will conveniently censor the dark side of cancer, but I hope it doesn't.
