Quarantine Duo Tapped for Shyamalan's Night Chronicles

While the man definitely incites raucous opinion of his work, M. Night Shyamalan will probably find a happy consensus around news that his trio of thrillers titled Night Chronicles are officially off and running. Shortly after The Happening hit theaters, it was announced that his next project would be a series of movies for which he would create the central premise, and then pass the idea off to suitable writers and directors; that news probably couldn't have come at a better time, considering the vitriol that surrounded The Happening (18% on Rotten Tomatoes). Word from Bloody Disgusting is that they've found adoptive parents for the first film - the guys behind the recently released Quarantine, John and Drew Dowdle.

Quarantine was a solidly kick ass film, so on the surface, having the Dowdles involved with the start to Night Chronicles is great news. We don't actually know much about the first film at present, save for the it will be set in Philadelphia where Shyamalan lives and works. Considering that many have nearly relegated Shyamalan to hack - an opinion I certainly don't share - serving as the idea-guy seems like a good fit. Obviously the guy beams creative moxie, but his execution can be a tad dicey. And while I've yet to see the The Poughkeepsie Tapes, which is the only other project to the Dowdles' name, I think the duo definitely has promise. As young filmmakers in this space, could you really hope for a better mentor?

As Shyamalan said earlier this year: "Filmmakers have always been my inspiration. Working with the next wave of innovative filmmakers will teach me many things that I can bring to my own writing/directing and give my stories the opportunity to be brought to the screen in a stunning way." This trio of thrillers is definitely going to be the new gem of the genre, which I intend to track with eager anticipation.

I question how difficult it really was to make Quarantine, since it's effectively a botched shot-for-shot remake of [REC]. As for Shymalan, he hit pay dirt with The Sixth Sense, and it's been a downhill tumble ever since. He should be seeking redemption right about now, not entitlement.

So M Night fucked up his last movie so now they're saying "how about we just pay you to come up with the idea and then we'll let others do all the work"...sounds like a pretty good gig...I guess putting his name in front of every one of his movies finally paid off. It's like a brand the studios want to be able to put on their posters. And The Poughkeepsie Tapes was thoroughly creepy...I watched it under the premise that it was based on a true story which made it that much more chilling, but even after finding out it's not there's still some pretty disturbing scenes in there (especially when he gets his victim to slice the other girl's throat). These guys know how to make a successful horror film and since Shamylamalan knows what a successful horror film looks like this should turn out to be quite good.

THEY NEVER REALLY WROTE THE SCRIPT FOR "QUARENTINE", THEY JUST COPIED THE SPANISH FILM [REC] SHOT FOR SHOT. Therefore they will have to copy something else here in order for anything to look good....
