Rumor: Fox Has Another Planet of the Apes Movie?!

Those damn dirty apes may finally be back again. An interesting rumor of sorts showed up today on CHUD stating that Fox is developing another Planet of the Apes movie. However, it's not a sequel to Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes from 2001, but more of a prequel instead, titled Genesis: Apes. Apparently it's essentially a remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, a 1972 film that tells the story of Caesar, the first ape with speech who eventually started the uprising of the apes. This Genesis: Apes script has been floating around inside of Fox but hasn't been given a greenlight just yet, although it sounds pretty damn cool.

The story in Genesis: Apes follows Caesar, a genetic mishap with the ability to speak, as he grows up and is eventually thrown into custody, finding himself tortured by humans even though he is as smart and as capable as them. So in turn he violently tries to overthrow human society, which is what Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is essentially all about. The script was written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (of The Relic previously) and sounds like a very dark and very bold concept that I imagine Fox is actually somewhat scared of producing, which is why this hasn't had any real forward momentum yet.

Not being a Planet of the Apes fan myself, I'm not sure I'm interested in seeing anything from the franchise ever again, but I'll remain open to any fresh, new concepts. Maybe in the right hands, Genesis: Apes could actually turn out pretty awesome. Though I tihnk it's important to ask yourself these questions: Are you a fan of Planet of the Apes? Do you know anyone that is? I think the answers should tell you whether or not this is a good idea. Does anyone else want to see another Planet of the Apes?

Hell no. I love all the original movies, but we saw what happened when you put a big budget and a big producer behind a remake with what I consider to be Tim Burton's worst movie. Yes, even worse than Frankenweenie.

I haven't seen Conquest, but I have to say, an ape beginning to speak creeps my shit out more than ape-like people walking around with spears and guns and wearing clothes. I can see it having a slow, building beginning rather than springing his speech on us all at once. Then I could see the movie ending with all the apes in all the zoos all over the world busting out and beating people to death. That would be cool. All of them trying to replicate speech and sounding really bizarre. That would be odder than shit on a platter.

Conquest was the best of em in my opinion when they uprised and learned how to use guns and shit was awesome. A modern version would be a better action/thriller than anything else.

the original film was one f the greatest sci-fi films ever, with one of the greatest trick endings ever. it should never be remade, and I don't see why these others should be either. what's left to tell, and how will it not end up lame and derivative? Find some new ideas, Hollywood.

I really want to get my hands on the director's cut to hear the rest of the speech and see the humans get pummeled at the will of Caesar. They stopped the vengeful speech at this point and had him do a 180 (dubbed over low quality zoom ins on his eyes so you won't see his out of sync mouth) and spare the humans and talk about being nice or something - I never pay attention to it. Test audiences didn't like the original. If they remade the movie and it actually followed the same story then it would be awesome. But we've already seen how they went about remaking the original movie. I think they should just do new movies altogether to add to the existing ones.

Movies about apes are fucking great, always are. You can't make a bad movie with a god damn primate in it, it's fucking impossible, so long as we got some apes and/or monkies, it's gonna be a fucking TIGHT movie! Studies show that people love monkies, why? because they're so damned adorable! even when they're giving dustin hoffman diseases!

So what can we expect from Rick Jaffa (EYE FOR AN EYE, THE RELIC) and Amanda Silver (THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE, EYE FOR AN EYE, THE RELIC). If past performance is any indicator, the script will start off with a very cool concept then swiftly crash and burn into a mire of tropes, ridiculous gaffs, scenes forecast from a mile away and, just to throw a few surprises and twists, the movie will betray its own logic. Oh, and though this is "Science Fiction", science will be thrown out the window at the first opportunity for pixie-dust fantasy. So yeah, bring it on. You can make it, but you can't make me watch it. Maybe the sequel after this one will be a Scifi Channel Special and go direct to DVD. Then Fox can have their 3 DVD package of crap! What? You detect that I'm still cheesed off about the POTA TV b.m. and the Tim Burton bum-wipe? Frack Off!

Note to Viper: The 'original' ending didn't include a more hateful speech, or more graphic violence -- the original ending pretty much stopped with the end of the spectacular speech you duplicated in your note. The film faded out after Caesar's speech, with apes howling in the background, the fires raging, and mankind defeated and lost. The studio tacked on that ridiculous "Now it's time to put down our weapons, etc etc etc blah blah blah" with the repeated close-ups on MacDowall's eyes, toning the 'end of man' harshness down quite a bit in order to provide a more upbeat ("American") ending. Sorry to disappoint you, but if you just stop the movie right after Caesar's victory speech, that's about as close to the original ending as we're going to come. R

I am a huge Apes fan and there is still a story left to be told and that is of the Law Giver. Referenced many time and often assumed to be Ceaser, but in my opinion a decendent of Ceasers and this story can be spun in two different directions, one going to the original film and one leading to the ending of the fifth film. Either way it could be a great new take on an old franchise.

#9 - Roddy McDowall was one helluva an actor, wasn't he? I still remember his performance in this scene when the film first came out when I was in 8th grade. Even at that young age, I couldn't believe how powerfully he could act and emote under all that ape makeup. He was one of our best and most versatile actors, who could step into just about any role demanded of him.

I would love to see another Planet of the Apes movie. Though I did not see the originals, I felt that Tim Burton did a great job with this film! If anyone else makes a sequel or a remake, they are going to kill it. I have been waiting since 2001 to see what happens to Mark Walberg(if he comes back for the 2nd). They should have made a part 2 years ago but in a wierd way it is still fresh. I just got watching the Blu-Ray version of the 2001 film and it was phenomenal! I wish there was a part 2 to watch after seeing how that one ended. PLEAAAAAAAASSSSSEEEEEEEE make a part 2 so that we can see what happens!!!!!

Yes!I would love to see another Apes film!I love them all and even the Tim Burton version.This franchaise started the greatest movie series of all time!we need more Apes films,and there is a HUGE following!we need to see what happened in the end
