The Tale of Despereaux Trailer

What a cute little mouse! Universal has debuted the final trailer for their upcoming holiday animated movie, The Tale of Despereaux. Unlike DreamWorks' Monsters vs Aliens, I don't think this looks that great. As much as everyone will probably say they loved it when they watch it, it won't be one of those new classic animated movies, at least that's what I think. They repeat the same exact jokes that they used the first time around, which doesn't amuse me, and they finally give us a taste of what the actual story is about, which yet again, doesn't appeal to me. Okay fine, I admit, by the end of this, it starts to look fun.

The Tale of Despereaux is co-directed by animation veterans Sam Fell (Flushed Away) and Robert Stevenhagen (ex-animation supervisor) working under Framestore Feature Animation. The screenplay was adapted by filmmaker Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit) and is based on the Newbery winning book of the same name written by Kate DiCamillo. Universal Pictures will be debuting The Tale of Despereaux in theaters everywhere on December 19th this holiday season.

I agree Alex I saw this preview when i went to see Wall-E and i was bored silly. It didn't grab me at all. Its just another Dreamworks copy of what Pixar did 10 times better already (see the references to Ratatouille). I wont bother seeing this one.

Sorry Matt this isn't dreamworks this is Universal. Nice to see Universal stepping back into the animation game, sad to see that it doesn't look that great.

This looks about 5000x better than that crap aliens vs monsters movie. I don't like the fact that it was written for the screen by the tools that did the Chipmunks movie, but I think I mostly blame that film ont he director and FOX in general. The directors for this look very promising. This is still the same basic crap that I hate from the US animation industry, but my real point here is that this looks like it was actually written and has a sustainable plot. The monster/ aliens movie looks like a good idea for a short that they decided to stretch out for a feature. I'm gonna bet that most of the bits in that flick are gonna be based on random crap the funny guys came up with during recording sessions. It'll probably have some funny jokes and looney tunes style sight gags, but it's not going to be a very good movie. This one might not look as 'fun' on the surface, but I'll bet the story will be more engrossing (at least, if you're a kid).

I gotta say, I don't think this looks brilliant, but I think it looks cute enough. I'd say it looks like a solid three-star flick; amiable enough for a rental, but no classic (but, then again, not everything has to be). One thing too, is that I really, REALLY appreciate the lack of crude humor in the trailer. One thing I HATE about modern 'family films' is that, outside of Pixar, they all have to have sex and fart jokes, and I was cheered by the absence of any such thing here. It looks to be a pleasant, family-friendly little fantasy, and I think that's enough.

The book is wonderful, I read it to my daughter a couple of years ago. The book is darker than the movie appears to be, based on the trailer. I hope they don't wander too far from the original story.

I loathed Ratatouille. This one seems more interesting but I still won't see it. Perhaps Saturday morning three years from now on T.V.

I've read the book. I've listened to the audio-book. I've seen both trailers. From what I see so far, this movie does not begin to do this amazing book justice. I don't think I'll see the movie because it doesn't have the magic of Camillo's book and takes too many liberties with the plot for the sake of slapstick humor and action/adventure cliches.

I may be in the minority here, but I HATED this movie! Why does Hollywood have to ruin an absolutely terrific book. The animation is more than fine, the problem is with the storytelling. PLEASE do not waste your money going to the theater and spending good money to see this, rather go to the bookstore and buy this wonderful and delightful story and discovery why it was good enough to win the Newbury Book Prize. My daughter and I read it together when it first came out and it was one of the best children's book that I have read in a long time. What a dissapointment this movie is.
