Fascinating Valkyrie Featurette - Through Bryan Singer's Eyes

Hollywood's big WWII trend kicks off this December with Bryan Singer's Valkyrie and it promises to be one hell of a debut. We've been running trailers for the past few months, but now we have a great behind-the-scenes featurette that will hopefully change your mind about the film. As Tom Cruise says, "Bryan's an extraordinary filmmaker who had an obvious fascination with this time period." This featurette shows us why his vision for this film is so powerful in addition to how he is making it more than "your father's World War II movie." And I love how Christopher McQuarrie explains that Singer was "constantly searching for what was authentic and at the same time something we had never seen before."

At the height of WW2, a group of high-ranking German officers hatched a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, and seize power of the military command in order to end the war. The operation was codenamed "Valkyrie", for the emergency plan that was meant to be used in case of a revolt against the Nazi government. This plan had been modified by the conspirators to ensure their success, but for various reasons the plot failed when finally carried out on July 20th, 1944.
Valkyrie is directed by Bryan Singer, who previously directed The Usual Suspects, X-Men 1 & 2, and Superman Returns. The film's screenplay was written by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, The Way of the Gun) and Nathan Alexander. Valkyrie arrives in theaters on December 26th this year.

There is nothing authentic about it. Detail? Where? Look at all the little details! If he wanted it to be so authentic he would have filmed it in the German language. Still looks like crap.

#5 yes cause most of the great hollywood epics have been made in its native language. Sense the irony. However this still doesnt look so good. Tom better do some good action flicks instead to get back to his A list standard.

I'm sure it will look good and be told well, but I don't think i can get over the fact that they're speaking English. I really hope no one will be speaking English with a German accent!

#5 Would it been more authentic if everyone would speak german? Sure. Is it needed to tell the story? not really. Most of the cast are English and American. I rather have them speak native then with a bad german accent. But there's plenty of authentic stuff going on. For one they filmed in Berlin. That is authentic. If "how to read papers the way the nazis did back then" isn't your idea of detail, then you should not go see movies period.

I know the ending to this, a massive table protects Hitler from the bomb and Tom Cruise is filmed while getting tortured because they pussied out. Oh well it didn't ruin Titanic for me. Wow, great picture. I really don't care if they are speaking english or german. I am just hooping the story can be told well. I am more concerned about Tom Cruise playing the role.

I think this looks great and I'm looking forward to it. And to everybody who's whining about it being in English - come over, here in Germany it'll be dubbed, so you can watch it in German here. 😉

I'm even more pumped about this movie. Singer is always known for his attention to detail and with this project I'm sure nothing will go unnoticed. Bring it!

It boggles my mind that people are upset that it is not in German. If it were in German the audience and marketability of the film would be tiny and would never justify the budget! It has to be n English, and I'd rather it be in plain English than have the actors try and fake a bad German accent. And the cast! My God! Awesome ensemble cast: Cruise, Branagh, Nightly, Fry, Stamp, etc. And yes I include Cruise regardless of the rantings of the "I hate Tom Cruise" weirdos. And Bryan Singer directing? Fantastic. The cinematography looks beautiful, both cold and deadly and syrupy golden. It looks like he captured almost the dream of the best and worst of the time. Yes, I will be there opening weekend.

Wow. More than my father's WWII movie, eh? Too bad Paul Verhoeven beat you to the punch in a big way, Bryan and Tom. People are sour on this film for a lot of reasons, people. The lack of attempts to sound like men who speak German natively is a very small piece of that pie. One of the bigger ones has to do with having a man who tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler portrayed by a man who aspires to be the twenty-first century's answer to Josef Goebbels. My heart goes out to the von Stauffenberg (sp?) family. It must break their heart to have their best-known being portrayed in film by a man who has been telling people that he would like to see a day when "suppressive persons" (which, by their definition, includes people like ME) can only be read about in history books. If my grandfather had tried to kill the biggest mass-murderer of the twentieth century, and an adherent of one who aspires to top that helped himself to a production about said grandfather, I would be pretty upset too. Tom Cruise's ideal world has no Axl Roses, no Tim Burtons, no Margot Kidders, no Steven Spielbergs, no George Lucases, and ironically no Bryan Singers, either. It also happens to suck in the worst way possible. Anyone who says they are okay with Tom Cruise's ideal world by supporting his films is not okay with me.

Ya know, if they always insisted on doing historical films in the native languages of historical people they would never be able to do another film like Gladiator, 300, Cleopatra, or anything involving ancient times. The actors need not speak the native tongue of foreign and/or historical characters for the story to ring true.
