Barry Sonnenfeld Helming The How-To Guide for Saving the World

Barry Sonnenfeld

Barry Sonnenfeld hasn't directed much in the last few years. He started out in 1991 with The Addams Family and went on to make Men in Black, Wild Wild West, Men in Black II, and RV most recently. MGM and United Artist have hired Sonnenfeld to direct The How-To Guide for Saving the World, an alien action comedy from newcomer BenDavid Grabinski. The script showed up on this year's Black List, which means it might not be that bad. "A non-action-hero guy not unlike me, in terms of manliness, and a woman who hates him find the book and have to save the planet from an impending attack," Sonnenfeld said.

Not only has Hollywood become increasingly obsessed with alien scripts (like Battle: Los Angeles), but this sounds a lot like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. That's not really a bad thing, since I actually enjoyed that movie and wouldn't mind seeing more like it (since the sequel(s) never got greenlit). The Black List log line for this says: "A loser discovers a book on how to stop an alien invasion and is thrust into action to stop a real one." Obviously we know Sonnenfeld is quite experienced with aliens, having made both Men in Black movies. I just hope he's still a capable director so we don't end up with another Wild Wild West.

sounds neat. I did like Hitchhiker's Guide, so a similar story should be good.

Hmm. How to comment? Slag on RV and MiiB? Nah. Too Easy. Get irate about an americanization/reboot/rip off of Hitchhiker's? I guess I could...OR.. Express my deflation by revealing my hopes that Sonnenfeld's next project would be a Space Quest feature film? GOLD!
